The nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2020 are in, and the list features the Notorious B.I.G., Whitney Houston, Pat Benatar, Dave Matthews Band, Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Judas Priest, Kraftwerk, MC5, Motörhead, Nine Inch Nails, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren, Soundgarden, T. Rex, and Thin Lizzy. The top vote-getters will be announced in January and inducted May 2nd, 2020, at a ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall.

To be eligible for this year's ballot, each nominee's first single or album had to have been released in 1994 or earlier. In a break with recent history, a majority of the nominees are appearing on the ballot for the first time, including Dave Matthews Band, the Doobie Brothers, Motörhead, the Notorious B.I.G., Benatar, Soundgarden, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy, and Houston. This is the sixth ballot appearance for Kraftwerk, the fifth for the MC5, the fourth for Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, the third for Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode, and the second for Judas Priest and Rundgren.

The reason they are appearing for the first time is that, for various reasons, very few of them rate HoF honors. Whitney Houston rock and roll? Doobie Brothers?? Really?? Rufus and Chaka Khan?? Gag!! etc, etc, etc There may be a few, but the problem with this HoF is they let so many in each year that the truly great ones are already in. We are down to the third string.

Whitney Houston is totally Rock n Roll. Just because they do love ballads don't mean it ain't rock n roll.

Doobie Bros, even more so. Doobies are totally HoF worthy.

Just because you don't like a musical artist doesn't mean they are not worthy. Through the years I've seen some other artist I didn't like and barfed at, but they got in. But, whatever, its fun to debate who is worthy and/or not.

Whitney Houston was a great and sold 200 million+ albums. Influenced many others and her songs are still played today. Somebody liked her. Now, its not heavy metal and definitely dancy pop with love ballads, but it is still rock n roll. I don't particularly like Whitney Houston music, but she was a great singer and appreciated by many. I wouldn't vote for her, but she got inducted by a peer group. Lets see if she gets in.

I'm stoked for NIN getting inducted. That was one of my favorite bands late 80s/90s. The album 'Pretty Hate Machine' (1989) should get them in alone. Trent Reznor recently said he hopes he doesn't get inducted. Sorry Charlie...you are inducted...now what?!? Campaign for people not to vote for you? LOL.

I like seeing people's reactions. Some have the same attitude that the RnR HOF sucks. But, it is just entertainment and a pretty good recognition to get inducted if you are a musical artist.

We all have our favorites and hates. but, think there are millions of people that think different. Whitney Houston for example.

If Whitney Houston is a rock and roller, why not Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, etc? They are at least as deserving of the classification. (I am being facetious in that list. But, she is an R&B artist, and a good one, but not a rocker.) And, sorry, you may have rocked to the Doobie Brothers, but, those of us who were older when they came out, laughed at more than rocked to their music. They were one step up from the Monkees.

So...what's the definition of 'Rock-n-Roll'? Those jazz artist you mention weren't really playing rock-n-roll although they did help in the creation of the music art form. It's very subjective for sure. The rap groups getting in are probably more controversial than Whitney Houston. Who knows maybe she won't get the votes. This is NIN third induction and haven't got in yet. Maybe there will be a back lash and Whitney doesn't make it.

In my opinion the Doobie Brothers are in. Just because you laughed at them their back catalog and history is more than deserving. along with the Monkees...They are part of rock n roll history as well. The Monkeess are a debate in themselves, but they did turn a lot of people onto the music with their fictitious TV rock band and later as a touring band.

I quickly went on the Rock Hall of fame website and didn't see what they consider what is Rock -n- Roll. Too me, if it has a back beat and you can dance to it.

This is what Chuck Berry the Godfather of Rock-n-Roll says:

Rock`n`roll music just, let me hear some of that rock 'n' roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock 'n' roll music
If you wanna dance with me

I have no kick against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darn fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until it sounds just like a symphony
That's why I go for that rock 'n' roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock 'n' roll music
If you wanna dance with me

I took my loved one over 'cross the tracks
So she could her my man a whalin' sax
I must admit they have a rockin' band
Man they were goin' like a hurricane
That's why I go for that rock 'n' roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock - roll music
If you wanna dance with me

Way down South they gave a jubilee
Them country folks they had a jamboree
They're drinkin' home, brew from a wooden cup
The folks dancin' got all shook up
And started playin' that rock 'n' roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock - roll music
If you wanna dance with me

Don't care to hear 'em play the tango
I'm in no mood to dig a mambo
It's way too early for the congo
So keep a, rockin' that piano
So I can hear some of that rock 'n' roll music
any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock 'n' roll music
If you wanna dance with me

ELIGIBILITY
Artists - a group encompassing performers, composers and/or musicians - become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. Besides demonstrating unquestionable musical excellence and talent, inductees will have had a significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of rock & roll.

also from Wiki:

The Monkees
In June 2007, Monkee Peter Tork complained to the New York Post that Wenner had blackballed the Monkees, commenting:

[Wenner] doesn't care what the rules are and just operates how he sees fit. It is an abuse of power. I don't know whether the Monkees belong in the Hall of Fame, but it's pretty clear that we're not in there because of a personal whim. Jann seems to have taken it harder than everyone else, and now, 40 years later, everybody says, 'What's the big deal? Everybody else does it.' [Uses studio artists or backing bands.] Nobody cares now except him. He feels his moral judgment in 1967 and 1968 is supposed to serve in 2007.

In a Facebook post, fellow Monkee Michael Nesmith stated that he did not know if the Monkees belonged in the Hall of Fame because he could only see the impact of the Monkees from the inside, and went on to say: "I can see the HOF (Hall of Fame) is a private enterprise. It seems to operate as a business, and the inductees are there by some action of the owners of the Enterprise. The inductees appear to be chosen at the owner's pleasure. This seems proper to me. It is their business in any case. It does not seem to me that the HOF carries a public mandate, nor should it be compelled to conform to one."[66]

Various magazines and news outlets, such as Time,[67] NPR radio,[68] The Christian Science Monitor,[69] Goldmine magazine,[70][71] Yahoo Music[72] and MSNBC[73] have argued that the Monkees belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Good comparison. Dave is probably going to agree, too, saying, "Exactly!". Perspective is everything!

Lemmy should have been inducted while he was alive and could have jammed Ace of Spades down their throats. I like Dave Matthews but hall of fame? Remember that joke "what do you get if you play a DMB album backwards? A new DMB album". Pat Benatar was and is worthy. She was an opera singer originally. Look at "hell Is for children" and tell me that band wasn't ahead of its time. But every selection has that debate about taste. Whose taste more specifically. Many of the acceptance speeches are giant long polite FU's for taking forever or guys getting out of their walkers to thank the academy for finally doing it. Bonjovi and Kiss standout as that.

LOL. I always debate music. I'm in a cover band. We debate music all the time. But, you are EXACTLY right...when all said and done, Bortles will be in the NFL hall of fame. Just waiting for his turn with the Rams.

LB - Wow, I agree with your rating 100% including your comments on Pat Benetar, T. Rex and Todd Rundgren. I kind of agree with your rating and, esp comment, regarding the Doobies, except they pretty much make me gag. The only people I know who used the term "doobie" were pretty much numnuts. I am sure that prejudiced me against this band, but, there music was so juvenile.

Garcia .... I liked the early Dobbie Bros stuff but the Michael McDonald era was horrible.

R & R HOF inductions are kinda like surf contests -- bad judging and biased scores based on the wrong criteria. A few of my faves are in, but most have no chance, because they're more about the music than the image.

BTW, if you dig thru Thin Lizzy's live albums, you might find a reason to elect; their studio stuff was mostly bland and stiff, but they were phenomenal live. Similar case for Judas Priest based on their 1973-1979 work.

I would put Wishbone Ash in there as well, based on pure musicianship, but they don't have enough fame outside of England to get in a hall.

BTW, Wishbone Ash will be in Melbourne February 15.
