We are dependent on petroleum for energy, raw materials to make stuff, and fertilizer. Rather than use that dependence as an excuse to try to use fossil fuels as if there is no cosequence and as if the supply is endless; we need to use the energy now available to build a recycling economy. We need the energy from fossil fuels to build renewables. Once those are built though then they replace themselves until the sun burns out and the wind stops. Yes too there is a finite carrying capacity.

This doesn't mean that if the economies of the West are restricted and curtailed because of draconian energy regulations, that those countries won't stop polluting until they achieve a targeted economic level that surpasses the present levels in the West. AND.... IF those countries achieve economic superiority, will they use their new found wealth to clean up the environment???

Logically and without question, the root of all of humanity's and the plant's ills is excessive human head count. Politics and policies can't do anything to remedy that. People in my neighborhood balk at restrictions on irrigation. They water 3,4,5 days a week, all year long, even in the dry season when we are supposedly under 1-day-per-week restrictions. Then they get mad when our irrigation wells turn salty. Oops, maybe you shouldn't have pumped the shallow aquifer so low as to create negative pressure and suck lagoon water into our wells. Microcosm of the bigger issues.
