I am an avid surfer and would like to hear from someone who has had a hernia operation.
How long did it take you to get back in the water.....and can you still feel anything at the site of the fix? Any info would be appreciated....

Depends on the size of your tear. I had an umbilical hernia and the doctor chose not to do it laparoscopically which caused my down time to be longer. He wasnt satisfied with the success rate of umbilical repairs through Laparoscopy. Due to the pain following the surgery, I didnt want to have to go through it again so I waited three months before doing any crunches. I started running again a month after surgery and was in the water within 3 months. Again, i was conservative but just didnt want the surgury again. Big pain in the ass. No pain now and no problems since. It does feel a little odd where the mesh is sewed in probably because of scar tissue build up. And when I surf you can see a circular rash red rash from it because of that build up. But, some people recover faster depending on the size of the tear and the location. What did your doc tell you? ------------------------- If you want to hit a home run, you have to swing the bat. |

Six weeks sounds like what they told me but he said not to push myself. This was 8 years ago for me. And yeah, get it done over summer. ------------------------- If you want to hit a home run, you have to swing the bat. |

The downside of non laparoscopic is the heal time from the incision, and i have seen some pretty big incisions. I would opt for the laparoscopic procedure if at all possible. I think part of the issue with people is that they try to do too much too quick after the operations.

Inguinal laproscopy surgery failed within six months. Was opened up soon after. Try to get a good doc. that doesn't use mesh, one that knows what he is doing. Be careful if you use mesh, alot are being recalled. Get the information on which company made your mesh and the serial number, also ask the doc how many tacks he puts in.

I had a dbl hernia operation a couple of Years ago. My Dr. went with the Laproscopic, and I took about 4 weeks to heal enough to return to light duty work. I still feel something on my right side, where the worst one was at. I might have to make a call to my Dr. and find out what brand of mes, as I didn't know (at the time) there was any alternative. I have also had some issues with being able to stretch in certain ways, like sitting cross legged on the ground. That is almost impossible to do comfortably since the op. I have talked with my regular Dr. (not the surgeon) and he says he doesn't feel anything out of the norm, and that most likely it is just the way the mesh was stiched(tacked) in place. Overall I am glad I had it done. as I had trouble laying on my board and paddling before. Felt like I was always squashin my right nut.

I have an inguinal hernia in the groin and just had an initial consultation with a surgeon. He said that the mesh he uses from Medtronic is self adhering. There are no stitches or staples to hold it in place. He said the product had been out for about 10 years and has never been recalled. He described it as having little barbs on it kind of like Velcro. I thought that sounded crazy. I see another surgeon tomorrow. The first surgeon recommended laparoscopic but said he would do an open procedure if I want which I am leaning towards just for the fact that they can do it with local anesthesia and sedation vs general anesthesia for the laparoscopy. The pain varies from day to day from barely noticeable to pain and fullness in one testicle. Did any of you experience testicle pain and was it relieved after the surgery?

I had a small hernia tear a long time ago and my doctor at the time said it would heal itself. She just had me wear compression shorts and it did heal. but, it was a small tear.
bumping up 2011 threads! Good job. |

I do this for a living as a PA . All three ways work well ; Laparoscopic , Robotic and open . See a surgeon that can do it whichever way best suites you . I had my umbilical hernia fixed open with mesh and it took about 45 minutes to fix and I was home by noon . recovery various on the individual . If you choose to go without mesh , you can expect a much higher recurrence rate .

I've had two. One I waited too long and the recovery was several months. The second was a small inguinal and the recovery was about two months. Both were cuts.
Don't wait to get it done. It goes from no big deal to a real pain in the ass. ------------------------- I was right. |

I've had 2. I was moving a tilt skillet at a Chi Chi's when I heard/felt a pop in my nether regions. I felt around the area the doc does, nothing. Until I got in the shower, coughed and, what looked like a frog throat came out around the belt line.

So i've been dealing with what I thought was a hardened lymph node in my left groin and on/off left sided testicular pain - i've been thinking I have lymphoma or cancer but now it sounds like hernia. Does the surgery alleviate the testicular pain?

Find a surgeon that has expertise in hernia operations. He/she should be able to perform both open and laparoscopic techniques and will recommend the best for your particular case. Laparoscopic tends to have quicker recoveries but it's not the best way in every case Traditional mesh is fine and been used for over 20 years. The lawsuit mesh is easy to Google and you can double check with your surgeon if he/she uses one of them. AVOID mesh plugs!!!! Lots of complications including chronic pain. Most surgeons let patients return to full activity in 4-6 weeks. Bottom line, the surgeon and the technique plays a big role in your recovery and long term outcome. A bad hernia repair can result in many years of problems. If you have a specific question feel free to PM me.

My second hernia was found while the doc was fondling the nether regions. I had a real job back then and got W.C. bennies. It was out patient and the Doc shot me up, sent me home told me to make sure I had a bowel movement the next morning plus other things I was too high to remember. The next morning I drank a cup of Costa Rican Coffee which opened the window of opportunity. Just as soon as I assumed the position, it felt like someone reached up and tried to pull me down my the ol' boys. I got up and yell to the wife, to get what ever the doc told me cause I'm not getting up until it's shooting out my arse. That guy was the worse. It felt like he gave me a poodle cut with a rusty razor. The hole time of recouping, I'd take a sheet and "toga" it between my legs as I walked around bent over. The plus side of both my hernias was I got paid and finished 2 Spanish text books ( not at the same time).
