Has anyone been before? Looking to fly into Lisbon late September and finish my trip in hossegor. Really looking for advice with transportation. Due to the length of my trip the cost of the rental car came out to $3500 USD! Please help me out if you have some prior knowledge, thanks.

For the most part, you can get where you want to go in Europe by train. Go to the Euro Rail website and see how that works for your itinerary. The train prices are fairly reasonable, especially if you get a package.

Have you taken these trains from Portugal to France? Figured it would be a pain in the ass to transport boards and bags via train

I have. To France and Spain from Portugal. Plenty of storage space on the trains for board bags, etc. Long boards will be a bit more of a challenge, but are doable. Short boards, no problem at all. You might look on the web site to see if anything has recently changed in this age of terrorism, but no problems with boards a few years ago.

Long story but get your ticket in hand before you get to train gate. I showed up with reservation, with reservation number, confirmation number and almost did not get on train. 20 minutes of pure panic. People in Spain not really wanting to help. We said look at this look at that, they said sorry and train is booked by the way, sorry. Wife with one last attempts says "what about this number" guy puts number in and wallah, tickets start to print.

Yeah, if you have a set itinerary, get your tickets online before you go. Much easier that way.

Go to Portugal. Obidos/Peniche area (supertubos) of Portugal has a lot of options, as well as France. Swell direction matters in Europe big time. France was great but I never wanted to leave Portugal. I would live there in a heartbeat.

Great to hear! I'll be spending 2 1/2 weeks there so I look forward to checking out Peniche. Thanks

Oh man, I'm jealous. Be sure to eat grilled sardines. Stay away from the eel dish, we couldn't stand it. However we kept ordering it accidentally. I think it goes by various names. You might like it but I found it too grassy or earthy, dirty might be a better word. Food is amazing there. Check out the castle and town at Obidos, drink some Ginja. Take pics!

The trains are awesome. Plenty of storage at the end of the cars for boards. usually you will have a whole section of seats to yourself. The beer and wine and food served is excellent.. especially beer choices. It's an awesome experience.

I learned not to stress too much on missing a train connection.. there is always another or another route. Makes it easy to slow down and go with the flow.

There are several train operations.. kind of like airlines. smaller regional routes and the hi speed longer range routes. So here could be additional charges on the regional tracks. But you will also get a lot of free access to attractions and such.
