Howdy all, my lovely wife has been eager to learn to surf. She has watched a ton of surf flicks with me and has put "getting tubed" on her bucket list. I have paddled out with her a few times but I have found that the worst teacher for a spouse is their spouse. She is hoping for 1-on-1 lessons from a woman closer to her age that understands the do's and don'ts of our older bodies. We have boards a-plenty and are located in the heart of Cocoa Beach. Thanks for any suggestions.

So, get ready for the down side, , , , she will not be mowing the lawn anymore but, you will get used to doing the laundry and vacuuming the house and such. LOL

Ding, that is a possibility but I am willing to pitch in a little more to have more surf trips on the horizon....

My girlfriend likes to get surfing lessons just so the instructor can push her into the waves.
She only likes catching waves on her own when she can stand up in the water on small days and push the board into the wave and jumps on to do her pop-up.
On Easter Sunday I got her lessons at Pura Vida Surf School right next to (or behind) Coconut's on the Water, Franky the owner has a special; 2 students for 2-hour lessons for just $99! Debbi is 65 y.o. and Franky is a great teacher/coach and a really nice guy! All Debbi's friends thought Franky was so cute, they were jealous!

My wife has been surfing for around 25+ years and would make an excellent instructor, I'll ask her....

I was teaching my girlfriend to surf in Tamarindo, just pushing her into some shorepound away from the ever present crowds and made the ultimate rookie mistake and let the leash get wrapped around my arm. She takes off perfectly and my arm nearly gets ripped off...thankfully nothing too bad happened, but I spent the rest of the week with my entire arm turning completely black and greenish blue.

If 3rdWL feels froggy, maybe he'll post the picture I sent him of the damage.

Yes. When I'm teaching people and pushing them I advise them not to leash it.

In hind sight that's what I should have done, but there were so many people both surfing and swimming, I didn't want the board to get away from her and hit somebody.

My wife excelled exponentially by body boarding on days that were not small longboard learning days. She learned, really the most integral and non intuitive nature, of how the ocean works. And also how to negotiate the line up. More time in the water = more experience plus more time to actually ride waves.... only a surfer knows the feeling :-)

Cool. All surfing, no matter what form: is good. It's all fun.
If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.
I've taught thousands of folks to surf, of all ages shapes and sizes.
I teach currently at a couple beachside shops. I would love to help her get started.
But if she is more comfortable with a lady, we have a great water woman available who could set her up.
Let me know. Her name is celina

Got the PM and responded back. Thanks for the heads up on the dings and dents. She is a pretty tough chick. Went to Kuwait during one of the those stupid Gulf conflicts and saw some heavy shit. She was not in the action but worked on the guys at the medical evac ER. She has taken a few lumps over the years herself and will go for it when required. We skied/boarded the Alps and she would go for some pretty vert drops. Me, I'm a full mountain cruiser.....surfing in my brain but sliding on snow. Talk soon.

I love helping women that are excited to learn how to surf. 30 plus years surfing, traveling, and competing to back up my advice and accompanied surf sessions. Always glad to share the stoke.
