Alan was surfing the Inlet this morning at sunrise as he did for so many years.
This isnt my firsthand account but they say he caught a long wave, paddled back out and a few minutes later they saw him face down next to his board. They rushed over, brought him to the beach, administered CPR until the EMT's arrived. He didnt make it.
Met him in the early 80's, Alan was a total legend, they broke the mold when they made him. Glad to call him a friend and share so many sessions over the years with him.
Rest in peace my brother...save me a spot on that right bowl you are already on im sure!

WOW, I did not think so many legends could pass this soon....MT, GP, MR, and now Alan.
Sad....Vaya con Dios... ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off. |

I heard that yesterday. Thanks for filling in some details.
He was a special guy for sure, often the first guy out in the morning, often the only guy out on some summer glassy days with minimal surf but still a big smile on his face. Many will miss seeing and jawing with him in the N. Jetty line up. With the stoke from his last wave fresh in his mind, he went out like many of us would like too, R.I.P. I never met the man, but can't count how many times his name was at the bottom of a photo that had me stoked. https://youtu.be/QIf1zl1bQXc

Surfed DP with Al back when 1st peak was still working, pull in at 5:20AM and Al was already there in his white van. We made small talk in the dark and I was always impressed by his stoke. Prone or standing he was the one having the most fun!! Everyone knew Al and gave him the most respect I have ever seen given to a surfer when things were still edgy w/ some enforcement to the peaking order...No one ever dared drop in on him, rather you would cheer him into waves; great memories of you racing down the line towards second peak, big smile the entire way....After 1st peak stopped breaking, I didn't see much of Al. The world needs more "Al"s. quiet, humble, sharing, smiling...R.I.P. Alan
