Hi. I just turned 73 and still am in pretty good physical shape. My bigger wave surfing days are behind me, but I still like to slide and glide on glassy 2-4 Ft. surf. I'm looking for fun, consistent waves where I can tune-up without being crushed by overhead monsters. Where in Costa Rica would you guys recommend I can hang for 1-2 weeks and regain some of my past wave mojo? In advance, thanks for your suggestions. soulsurfer333

Playa Jaco. Protected bay. Usually really fun at dawn. If it is too big there then its too big everywhere but the point breaks. Or Playa Dominical but if looking for 2-4 feet only go when there is no swell forecast. Never Stop!

I've never caught Jaco not closing out. Depends on time of year and swell direction, but there are plenty of options. If Boca Barranca is clean, that can be a nice, fun glide. They've held international longboard contests there, but if it's clean, it might also be more crowded than you want to deal with, unless you're an early riser.

There was a thread on here a few years ago that named a place I can't remember... If I find the thread, I'll link it here, 'cause that's about my speed right now as well. I'm thinking it was in the Nosara area.

There's also Ollie's Point, if you're up for the adventure. I've never been there, but seen vids of some amazing, fun-size, longboardable surf.

If (when!) GREG chimes in, he can point you in multiple good directions. He's a great guide, and found me some nice little off-the-radar coves near Dominical that were fun and wind-protected.

I was just in Jaco in July. It was super fun 2-4 feet early morning. You gotta surf it when its small. If there is a swell running it does close out. Its a safe spot to surf also. 73 years old...I wouldn't recommend Playa Hermosa to him which is just a few minutes south.

I did actually catch some fun, chest-high waves at Hermosa in November (a Thanksgiving trip long ago), basically right behind the restaurant (old gate).

Jaco as well. It's the closest beach to the airport. Stay at the Cabinas Vista Hermosa. I'm friends with the owner and I'll let them know if you decide for them. It'll be the beginning of their Summer tho with summer like swell. I usually went 2 weeks after Easter for the deals and "Fall" swell.

Boca Barranca is the wave for you!!!

Salsa Brava is good. Ademas hay buena mota alla!

Tamarindo / Playa Grande in the dry season has nice waves always offshore winds and not too big, from my experience anyway. Been there quite a few times now.

Quepos or Manuel Antonio too but I think Boca Baranca would be the best longest and accessible wave.

+1 for Nosara...I've surfed/stayed in Quepos/Manuel Antonio, Jaco/Hermosia/Esterillos, Tamarindo/Playa Grande and Nosara/Guiones and IMO Nosara provides the best combo of mellow waves, good vibes, and pleastpant accommodations. Barranca is a great wave, but also fickle, often muddy/dirty, and with few decent lodging options. Inspiring to hear an elder is still charging surf trips! Pura Vida hermano!

Camaronal about 20 minutes south of Samara. Stay in Camaronal or Punta Islita area and have an easy 3-5' wave with some bigger sets. Huge sandy beach break and crowded is about 15 people, mostly surfing one of the two main breaks. A few more people will come on really good days, but plenty of waves, easy locals, and a bunch of old dudes from Florida longboarding. Samara has enough to do for food and stuff, but it's still super laid back. Gets busy after about the 15th of December, but from about now until March, pretty much guaranteed to rain and offshores every morning and afternoon. There are plenty of empty waves as you go south from there all the way until Mal País.
