Water levels have dropped a foot or so and giant bass are gorging on shad. Everything from 2 inch to one lb gizzard and threadfins. Getting 75 fish and more on artificials. Go get em boys, gonna be a fantastic spawn. Lots of fat girls with green tails roaming and feeding

Dang! sounds awesome, you ever try any of the big swimbaits like the trout style the guys out in Cali use?

Crazy some of them are like 100$ lures, I think its mostly novelty but interesting none the less.

I have some handpours, 6 to 8 inch but found the ZMan big saltwarer swimbait works better at a fraction of the cost. 6 /0 hook let her rip

My son and I have been hitting the neighborhood ponds. Pulled out a 5-6 pounder and we were stoked. Not sure of the weight exactly but that one made me buy a scale. We caught one half the size roughly and it weighed almost 3lbs.

We are just getting into really figuring out the bass fishing as he is only 5. And I grew up hunting not fishing.

Cheaterfiveo - Do you run the stickmarsh guides? We may have spoke on the phone a few months ago in regards to gettin my son out on a lunker.

The bass were schooling and blitzing bait on the day before the cold front and the day after.

Fishing was also good the last few days, maybe the water cool down got the bait moving?

I got a big one yesterday on a jig with plastic craw, a good bigger bass lure.

Nice!

Yeah, yesterday they weren't hitting RattleTraps like before, they weren't really chasing, most of the catches I saw were on black worms like you, but I was out to catch a bigger one with big jig/craw, blue/black.

Got him. At first tap/tap go to set hook, nothing, it happened again, nothing. I knew he was good size if he could suck a heavy jig in and out so quick, so I gave it a break for a bit, went at it again and hooked him. Not huge but nice, 5 maybe 6 pounds.

Dang that's sweet! I fish mostly ponds from shore, and cant fish a jig without it coming back a blob of algae unless I really rip it in.

My go to has always been baby bass super flukes, or super fluke magnums....big girls love magnums lol

Flukes are great and weed free.

I too fish from shore mostly and fish the larger lakes in Suntree/Vierra.

Sometimes I'll use my kayak but usually not.

Many of the areas have vegetation, but they're not usually "scummy" except some small patches against the shore on the windward side.

There are open areas with mussel(?) beds too, close to deeper water and submerged and above water grass/pads too.

I like to fish the deeper water below culverts and drainage pipes too, especially after heavy rain like we had a few days ago.

This bass was my only fish and it was below a cement water ramp that empties into the lake (no water was flowing down it).

Are the bass in pre-spawn mode?

My neighbor said he's been getting them in cover in a shallow canal, but didn't see any beds.

I always remeber the spawn happens around when the azaleas bloom.

Seems like a couple species are "running" or spawning earlier.

I know the flounder, bull reds, pompano and cobia all "ran early" this year up in NEFL than in years past.

That or info spread has gotten better and previously by the time the word was out they'd been moving for a bit?

I got a few today, not near spawning areas, I saw no beds.

Got them on a white spinnerbait and blue/black jig with blue crawdad trailer.

Don't know if this warm up was long enough to trigger the spawn. The eggs and testis are mature and ready to go but they've got to get the right signal from mother nature. Water temps dropping into the low 50s for the better part of a week and then zipping up into the 60s for just a couple of days might not be the ticket. Whether bedding or not, they aren't going to be far from whereever they want to spawn and they are going to feed like crazy when they aren't dropping eggs, especially on winter warmup days like today. Last year there were beds all over the south end of Kenansville in mid January and then a front passed and the beds were vacant for a couple of days. Then there was a sustained warm up and the spawning re-commenced. Year before last I burned them up on frogs and buzz baits in mid-January in a not so double secrets used-to-be airboat access only hydrilla choked "retention pond" on a day like today with 80 degree temps and a ripping south wind and passing showers.

Regarding the timing of the spawn in general. Bass in central and south Florida are pretty flexible. You can find beds and fry balls from December to May depending on the weather, especially in the more fertile lakes where the adults have plenty of food to fuel up between spawning events and make more eggs to go around again and maybe again and again. There won't be just one spawn in an given lake. It is basically spring time down here from now until it gets good and hot and our fish are wired to take every chance they get to reproduce. It can make fishing awesome or frustrating depending on your perspective. Their mood changes with every frontal passage. Or you can have a year like 2010 where it is so cold that they are shut down for all of January and most of February and then when it finally warms up they all go on the beds at once in March. But that kind of year seems to be the exception down here.

Up north it is different. Spring is short and fast. Bass have a narrow time window to hit the magic temperature as water warms. There is a much more defined pre-spawn spawn post-spawn. This has shifted earlier in my middle aged life. But it isn't anything like central FL where the bass spawn has always been a diffuse on again off again timing mess.

We do get a fairly defined post-spawn where they school on shad (in select waterbodies where there are lots of shad) once it does get well and truly hot somewhere between late March and early May depending on the year. The females quit making eggs. The males finish guarding the nests and fry balls. They all get together and feast on the thredfin that are themselves schooling up with spawning in mind. The last few years this has happened in mid-late March on the St. Johns River and its lakes from George on south. Harney and the river either side of Harney have been nuts in late March. But I've seen the post spawn feed-fest happen more into May if March-April are on the cool side. Just depends on when the water gets hot enough to shut off any thoughts of spawning.

35 today 2 over 8lbs, all bursting at the seams. All the males are peeing; so really close. Spotting lots of fresh beds that fish are close too and attacking baits. Whatever phase; its catching time

I went this afternoon figuring it would be good before the cold front arrives.

We got only one fish, it was very slow.

Tried everything, the one fish cane on a grape worm.

fish slow slow slow, alot of water is stained. Peg a creature bait, lizard, worm or baitfish type slowly across bottom. stop and pull fish will not attack if bait leaves their zone. Most fish now are not feeding they are protecting. Good luck

^Excellent! what has to happen and how long til,, the bite begins again in your thoughts. A water temp/vis change, or a sustained warmup, # of days away from this full moon? I'm really inquiring to the largest/1st spawners I guess. Thanks in advance!

Next 5 days is a warming trend on waning moon. I am fishing 4 to 7 feet fishing "holes" in eel grass. Water today was 62 to 67 . If you can, fish with sun overhead to dusk. I dont know where you guys are geographically but I am fishing near Fellsmere, if that helps

I will be out for the next 90 days or so. Today saw fish roaming. Better activity from 11 am on. Most of my fish are on edges of grasslines, lilly clusters or floating junk piles. Water temp jumps quickly by noon. This moon will produce, pics to follow

Saw very few beds today, no fish on them.

We caught 4 but they were very small fish on worms.

Tried fishing "staging" areas too (deeper water near spawning flats and lily pads), 1 small fish.

Where did the bigger fish go?

I thought today would be good for us.

Thanks cheats. I'm fishing Suntree/Viera.

Will find some grass, the lake I fished is pretty big but the only cover is deeper water (shell bottom) and some lily pads.

If you are inclined or don't have a boat to run all the way down to the south of Farm13, throw a kayak into Fellsmere. It is fishing good too, worth the effort.

Also, if you like to eat panfish, the St. Johns between 520 and the Beeline is just stupid with the fattest bluegill that I have ever seen chasing mosquitofish and grass shrimp all over the place. A limit on fish >1/2 lb is do-able. And the butter cats, holy crap.

I got no fish Sunday and today.

Tons of beds now but it seems a lot of them are talapia.

I noticed the same thing this weekend in the neighborhood ponds. Ton of Tilapia cruising shallow. Also didn't catch any bass which was unusual for our spot.

New moon tomorrow, next 2 weeks total upswing. Got over 50 yesterday on trickworm and swimbait, super finicky light bite. Almost like they mouthed it to move from beds. Couple 5lbers and 3 over 6
Water is stained in marsh fish were super shallow close to hyacinth mats and bullrush

At least you caught some.

I thought I would do well today with the new moon coming, not so.

The water looks really stained like a car during pollen season.

Caught the skinniest bass I have ever seen yesterday. Looked like she was starving.

She fought strong and swam away quick. What should have been a 4 lb fish was barely 2 lbs.

Fished all week except yesterday; my son came in from College. Fish are prespawn, spawn and postspawn patterns.
Top water early chug bug, slush puppy or rogue, followed up by a steady diet of swimbaits, senkos or trick worms.
Averaging 60 fish per day mostly big females, biggest this week was 9.5

Nice.

Yeah we caught a few males with the bottom of the tail fin worn down and bellies a tad bloody I guess from fanning nests on the harder bottom that has shells?

A few fatter females too.

Our numbers aren't that great though, like 3 or 4 for a few hours.

One or two on Spooks, the rest on creature/craw type plastics (Havocs).

I haven't got a bite on a worm in awhile.

My grown daughter and Grandpa (no issues with hiking) have been fishing ponds around Palm Bay and wanted to get into some bigger fish with the hassle of a boat. (I know a boat can make a great difference)

Is it worth walking c54 or the banks of the pond grade down there?

Walk south on the levee that divides Stick Marsh and Fellsmere Water Management Area. Might be a few breaks in the veg that allow a casting lane. Lots of fish in there. Youtube vids indicate that the kayakers have been having a blast in there.

Probably best on a west or calm wind for casting ease.

I'm probably going to haul the canoe down there a few times before the weather gets too hot. Shouldn't be hard to get a bite on top water this time of year.

c 54 has outlets that each have humps on them from the water flowing, find those outlets and fish c rig or rattle traps, there are alot of big fish in c 54, alot of moccasins lately, be on the look out for them, also the bridges on c 54 hold fish. if you drive towards the outflow at sebastian river; the water quality is better

My buddy caught a big one Saturday, it was long as heck but really skinny.

Would have been a good one pre-spawn.

If I hear of anyone looking for a good guided session I'll refer them to your website.
