A trip to New Zealand was something of a bust--sprained knee, second morning, downtown Wellington. I've got a few pics up at the kneeboarding post in Surfing. This one's just a casual snap in an Auckland garden. It's fall down there, lots of European and American trees for fall color (the place was full of sweetgums and had some really big bald-cypresses). But there's also tree ferns. This pool photo in the same garden seems to be attracting attention.
Really bad picture and there were lots of more interesting buildings around (Parliament around the corner), but I was kinda proud to have noticed this one. Grey weather, small but good waves at Raglan's beach for normal beach-goers. The famous lefts are up the road in the direction opposite the photo And a bit of a magnificent native plant garden in Wellington. It's up a bundh of wiggly streets in the hills. The bus driver did a great job of dodging parked cars. This Bolivian palm at the Auckland Botanic Garden made friends. Auckland Botanic Gardens again. How to landscape with native New Zealand plants. Flax, Nikau palms, lots of shrubs. Edited: 05/31/2017 at 12:13 AM by ww |

The overcast weather was fine for being on the beach but lousy for photos. These guys were having a good time.
start end
Lots of surf school learners at the beach. Board colors look like Hershey chocolate sugar-coated Easter eggs. I suppose I should brighten the photo, but . . .

When you have a bad knee, you do tourist attractions instead of beaches & forests. This is the "tropical" garden at the elaborate Hamilton Garden, a public park that's worthy of Disney.
They have a pretty good Japanese garden with an Italian thing peeking up behind the wall.
And Chinese. All this, looking real authentic, on the North Island? Even something from England. Did get to see this old critter at the bird forest in Wellington. And there were a bunch of these in another bird zoo: Kiwis, too, but they were living in artificial night. Big. This guy was one of several bigger-than-life figures in the national museum's Galilpolli exhibit. The failed World War I invasion of Turkey cost a lot of NZ lives. The can of corned beef, or whatever, attracted lots of flies. |
