He was a great guy, I grew up in Daytona and talked with him many times, one of his consessions was near the Ocean Deck. I grew up from the Americano to the pier and bought many a drink from his stands. Back in the 80s I got to sail in a few of the Hobie Regattas that he was a part of (those races where huge back then). He was East coast pioneer for watermen for sure. RIP

Gaulden was the funniest man I have ever met! He had the best sense of humor. Any time he was around, you could count on being entertained. What a great role model for old age. You always felt like he enjoyed every minute to the fullest. He lived a long full life. RIP!

" ... Still, the best quotes weren't even by one of the inductees. They were reserved for the group's oldest member, Gaulden Reed, a Daytona Beach pioneer from the thirties who regaled the audience with a list of stories about Tom Blake and the Duke, moving everyone with his inspirational tone and a list of hilarious one-liners, most notably imploring the shortboard community to try riding longer equipment. "You guys don't know what you're missing," said the man of the sixteen-foot, 100-pound boards of yore. "We brought our girls out with us! And let me tell you, when we'd paddle with those girls in front of us, we were just two inches from paradise." And while that joke received the most laughs, it was his closing comment that summed up the celebratory feeling of the evening and the very reason for its existence.

"I feel sorry for those people who don't surf," he stated solemnly. "They don't know what it means to be alive."

He will be missed. I am grateful for the opportunity to have met him. Melody is right, he was hillarious. God bless his family.

Gaulden Reed was an extremely fortunate person to be able to do what he loved and while remembering his life, I'll bet it was a wonderful experience to relive it again. God bless he and his family. He is at peace and now knows all the answers, he will always be with us. Thank you Gaulden for your incredible contributions.

I'm really going to miss him.

Classic Gaulden Reed quote, talking about a luau on one of his many trips to Hawaii: "We got so drunk, we forgot where we buried the pig!"
