My friend's got a wedding in the San Jose Area in mid-late June. I have some vacation saved up and was thinking of crashing in Santa-Cruz for a week before the wedding. I was wondering if there are any reasonable places to stay for the week. Would a plan like that even make sense? Do they consistently have waves around that time? |

Seaway Inn is closer to the "west side" (Steamer Lane / Cowells and the Surf Museum, iirc.)
For summer south swells, you might go closer to the "east side" (south facing) breaks like Pleasure Point, The Hook, Sewer Peak, Rivermouth. No major worries where you stay; everything is within a 10-minute drive once you get there. I think there used to be a cheap Motel 6, but I can't find it now. Super 8 Motel does show up. Priceline lists 58 feature hotels / B&B's, so yes, lots of options. Good map to start with: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Loc...8-Santa_Cruz-Area.html Water will be chilly, but worth the full suit. NorCal stays light enough to surf late in the summer (almost 9pm?) Priceline |

Prepare for Cold. I surfed Monterey last early July, with a 3/2 and it was colder than anything I experienced in St. Auggie or Jax in the heart of winter. I own booties, but didn't bring them. If you have booties and a 4/3, you'll be fine. |

Yes. I can usually get away with a 3/2 booties for about 45 minutes then I go ice cube quickly.
Steamer lane is an absolute zoo. Try to hit it on off hours if you're going to go there. Also, the sense of who's wave it is (in the etiquette of Sebastian per se), does not apply there. Deep back doors or dropping in way past/deep into the white water and then bottom turning into the pocket to call you off their wave is practiced regularly. Also, it was laughable but I love you old guys around here but the 60 yos and up were the gnarliest/most localized guys out there. I have had a good handful of sessions out at the lane and it is very cool to jump off the rock right into the line up. There's a few peaks down the lane. Even one right in front of the stair case closest to the point that gets really nice and usually has half the crowd. Beware- the fishes> don't surf a lonely peak. I went out to "three mile" one time and there were two other guys out. When they left, one of them mentioned to me on the way in about never surf alone in that area. Took that to heart and promptly ended my session. Have fun! If you can. Get up to ocean beach in San francisco. Go see fort point but only surf it if you're ready for another zoo. I know there's a few NorCal folks that creep on here that can probably give more info. ------------------------- I type on fone 99% of time. Let the typos slyde. Thanks |
