YouTube.  Today.  And yesterday, a more routine rescue from the excellent Mike Lucas.

Apparently one of the participating civilians was Aaron Peirsol, an Olympic backstroker, Wedge regular, and water polo coach.  Newport Beach has water people in depth.

i don't know but, 'hey, a 20 ft wave is coming, lets head towards those rocks'
definitely wouldn't be my first thought.....

So many questions.  Why not just race it into shore?  Why did he stop?  The only thing that makes any sense is maybe he thought he saw the entrance to the channel and was trying to dart into it.  Then when it was all rocks, he slows down trying to find where he thought he saw it.  Maybe?

Not sure if it happened to them, but when a jet ski impeller is sucking foamy whitewater, there is no propulsion, so...

SoCal Video has a second video, followup to their first one and not so interesting.  The Los Angeles Times/Daily Pilot has a useful story.  The riders' injuries were not life-threatening.

A key comment:

Lifeguards quickly pulled the pair from the water as thousands of bystanders watched, according to lifeguards.

Disabled boats have been beaten against the rocks of the Wedge before, but it's unheard of for a functioning watercraft to end up caught in the dangerous swells, according to lifeguard Battalion Chief Brent Jacobsen.

"I've been here 30 years and I've not seen that happen," he said.

Reminds me of the time, , , , Monster Hole, BIG long period North East swell. LONG periods between even a ripple. We're sitting out in the center of the line-up, continuously paddling toward the tip of the North jetty in order to "keep station", waiting for the next set.

When, out of the inlet comes a good sized sport fisher and it heads right for us. WTF? This guy is just putzing along and is slowly cruising, very close to us, on our "inside" (right in the "drop zone"). My buddy, always the helpful one, screams at the guys in the boat, asking them what they thought we were doing sitting out in the middle of the ocean and WTF do they think they are doing? He, we, are getting a "go fuck yourselves" response from the boaters. Just at the same time one of the other surfers, who happened to be looking out towards the horizon, blurts out "OUTSIDE"! We all turn, and realize that even though we thought that we were already "outside", we were going to have to really start scratching in order to make it over even the first wave of the set! The turds on the boat realize what's happening and start screaming like raped apes! They put-the-pedal-to-the-metal and started to haul ass to the south. It was a Big F'in Set! They made it but by the time they beat the whitewater they were about 200 yards south of us and almost to the beach.

Darwin award honorable mention. Jetski's in surf are like partygoers playing with guns and deliberately missing eachother almost every time.

Florida seems to have parties like that.

Might be more fun at the Wedge July 20 onward.  Swell up to 20 sec.  I do NOT understand long-distance Pacific swell forecasts, except that they are less useless than what you get for the coast, here northward.

Hotel affordabilty seems to start near SNA airport, 7 miles from the beach, where I suppose parking might be findable on weekdays.

Newport Beach has a new monument.  OC Register
