What volume and dimensions are you 175-180 lb guys riding nowadays in a standard hi-performance shortboard shape? I'm 5'11 tall, 175-180lbs and in pretty good shape. I have been riding fat cheater boards all summer like a lost lazy boy and CI biscuit and jumping over to my old normal go to shortboard after half a year which is 5'10x19x2.25 feels so not fun to paddle or surf anymore in sub par waves...I've seen all the volume calculators online and all but just wondering what dimensions/volume everyone is digging on their standard shortboards for the similar height/weight as me. Think I might need some more foam.

Growing up in Florida I was thought "you had to" ride shortboards for waves stomach high and up. My trip to the Gold Coast Australia changed that paradigm for me. Guys were riding twin fins on solid 12ft. They were surfing 12ft like it was chest high for us.

Growing up in Florida I would have thought that you NEEDED a "step up" shortboard for double overhead.

I now surf a (cheater board) Lost Puddle Jumper from waist high to a few feet over head with zero issues. It's always more fun to me than my regular CI shortboard.

I'm 6'3" & ~192lbs. I can ride 30 liters, but prefer a few more liters.

2 yrs ago I was riding a 5'6" from waist high to way overhead hurricane/winter surf . I am 5'8"170-175 my volume # 29.5-30.5 . All my boards stay at that #. Anytime I GET ON A 6" AND ABOVE I feel out of sorts . In Nica in May and a month ago rode a 5'10",5'11" in double to tripple over head and never felt undergunned .STAY ON THE SMALLER BOARDS THEY WORK . That's why Kelly and the boys ride them . If I had a fish it would be a 5" or 5'2" blows my mind people ride 6ft fishes . Be blessed hope this helps .

Same size as you... I like grovelers to be about 5'6 x 20.5 x 2.4 with 31 or so liters. My shortboard is a wrv blunt 5'10 x 19.6 x 2.3 (epoxy) 29 liters. feels like the perfect amount of volume for me... Enough to paddle but still able to bury a rail when I want to. Lot of volume throughout the 5'10, extra foam in the tail and nose.

Ha ha!!! I had the same problem this week too. I've been riding a 5'7" quiet flight double agent all summer that I absolutely love. I switched over to my regular shortboard, 5'10" quiet flight modified hot rod 2, and it didn't feel right in the slop. I went back to the double agent yesterday and had more fun. I think that's what it's all about, unless you are surfing heats... It helps to work with a local shaper and there a plenty of great ones in brevard. I will be tweaking my next regular board from what I learned this summer. Embrace the evolution of your surfing and be willing to try new things. That's part of what keeps surfing so exciting to me. Good Luck in your quest!

PS: That was good advice above to stay as small as possible with the high volume boards. It took me a while to believe it, but it's true. My shortboard of choice for 20 years was a 6'3". Now it's a 5'10" with more volume up front.

5'11" * 12 7/8 * 21

I was advised stay less 6' but add volume by thicker / wider, so I said why not & tried it...I got that board over 5  years and haven't rode or bought anything else since....BTW I'm 190 just over 6'

get up early and go surf - it'll make that hangover go away and/or make the workday more tolerable :)

Yea I think I'm moving into the 30's for volume.. These cheater boards are fun but I want to be on a thruster again. Hot knife thru butter is always better than a spoon.

I have a 5'5" FW Baked Potato and its quite fun. I'm around 185lb. Its 36L and very very fast. Takes a bit of getting used to. Definitely a "back foot" surfer's board and turns without much effort once you have decent speed. Regular short boards just don't feel "right" anymore after surfing it for a while. Of course, its best for certain conditions. Not a barrel board for instance. It doesn't hold an edge high up on wave, so, if you're used to dropping in at an angle, you have to learn to drop in more straight then turn at bottom. In some ways I wish I had gone for a more "all around" board in the 5'9" range. In the FW series it would be something more like the Dominator.

Yeah 85% of the time here in Florida I ride my bake potato. I rock a 5'9 most of the time. It does the job for me being around 200lbs. Such fun boards they are,  even when surf gets a little jucey. I tried dropping down to a 5'5 BP but it felt way too small for me. So I'm selling the 5'5 so I can spring for another 5'9 or something.

That's funny cause I was thinking my 5'5" might be a little too much. I think a 5'3" may have been better. But, I guess height probably plays a big factor. I'm fairly short.

Yeah its about hight and weight. I am 6'1 and around 205lbs so 5'5 was not my friend when it came to catch as much as possible of the summer waves. The 5'9 is the one that catches everything for me and makes others wish they had one. LOL.

Where at in Nica? Fun Place. Definately some mushy points that like fatter boards but a few barreling beach breaks like the boom that like a thinner barrel rider. Stayed at Thunderbomb surf camp in northern Nicaragua and had a blast.
