From the Sat Bch PD's Facebook page:

Friday:
Petroleum Spill

The Florida Division of Emergency Management advised that there was a petroleum spill off of the coast of Brevard County this morning. We can expect tar balls and the possibility of a smell of petroleum for the next few days up and down our coast. Division of Emergency Management has generated a report and is investigating the incident. The beaches are open and we don't anticipate any further action.

Saturday:
Tar Balls Update

At 1:25 pm Friday, Brevard County Emergency Management notified officials in Brevard County of a report of "Tar Balls" washing ashore in Brevard County, specifically around A1A and Shearwater Parkway. Should there be a community concern the "Tar Balls" are a result of the artificial reef project near Pelican Beach Park, Mike McGarry with Brevard County Natural Resources and the project manager states the project involves putting structures in the water and there is no dredging, therefore the "Tar Balls" are not the result of the artificial reef project.

Maybe someone with a drone or condo view can spot the center of a slick?

That would explain the tar smudges in 'Surfanything's wax yesterday

UPDATE:

From Brevard County Emergency Management:

The information ABOVE is inaccurate. There was no report of a petroleum spill, and the tar balls are unrelated to the work that is being done offshore with the artificial Reef. There are no petroleum products involved in their work. For tar balls to form, it requires the evaporation of liquid from oil overtime. This is not a quick process.

What was the super strong gas smell yesterday in Sat Beach? Nobody was talking about it but it stunk.

There are still plenty of sunken freighters out there that have not yet given up all of their oil. During WWII the U-boats sank ships all up and down the Florida coast.

My buddy found a floating marker off the pier one day while he was Cobia fishing, it was from a spill in the gulf. A week or two later it was tar ball galore.
