Google Explore Flights to Hawaii.  I caught a low one to the Big Island, so hope to see lava.  The native trees are suffering disease, so forests are more or less off limits.

Also look at Explore Flights from MCO to Iceland.  $523 all summer.

Explore Flights should get you real fares to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne under $1300 (very good) and Auckland under $1200.  There's good winter surfing on Auckland's west coast, although no really great breaks (Raglan for that, potentially with a crowd).  But you need a car and/or maybe need to find a beach house to rent.

For Australia and NZ fares, try to book by end of day, March 1.  A Qantas sale is very brief.  I'm a fan of Air New Zealand.  They're pretty good at making long flights tolerable.

For August, might as well have flowing lava to look for.

Google's suggestion for Kauai isn't bad.

COPA is offering $249 Orlando to San Jose, Costa Rica.  Also good rates to San Diego and Portland, Oregon (where I'm headed in May).

Thinking of travel, the photo of the week has to be of Brett Barley in a super-nasty barrel.

Dunno think I'd say banyans on any given say Tuesday breaks better than Florida does on it's cane swell days... not to mention that amazing food at da poke out front by main road & good vibes in Kona town.

BTW ww I'm sure you know the drill but to see lava it's like a 5 mile walk along old road heading north from where the end of  the national park road is ( Google map "holei sea arch" as that's exactly where parking is at ) Pretty cool to do at night, can't see it doing the whole sea steam thing without going boat tour, but I found just walking out there at night seeing it glowing of in distance was amazing -just  bring a real flasliight as my wife & I did the walk back with phone flashlight not fun... Also, on way back to Kona I turned left from saddle road and you can drive upto 11,000' which is an awsome place to see sunrise & can day hike to top

Enjoy & thanks for sharing the links!

get up early and go surf - it'll make that hangover go away and/or make the workday more tolerable :)

I'm not planning Hawaii until next month, but might make a reservation for Volcano House cabin.  I already did Google Street View for the road along the lava area.  Will have to ask what's up at the time.  Of course getting to see actual lava would be worth any amount of effort.

Saddle road should be amazing.  Because of disease hitting the 'ohi'a lehua trees, some of the forest areas are off limits and it's unwise to go into real natural areas for fear of spreading disease.  Which leaves lots to see anyway.   Might get to see one or two palm enthusiasts' gardens.  It's a fairly quick trip, so I think it'll be pretty much drive out of Kona, get to Kilauea, reach the coast, and then head back.

For surf, I want to finally visit CR and keep visiting Outer Banks when feasible.  My first exposure to surf there was on a college field trip.  Two of us did a sneak dawn trip from Manteo to the beach in a university van.

Looks like endless hikes.  I think the trip will turn into a fairly quick visit to the National Park, but it seems I could easily use the time around the Kona coast.
