Not in Iguana itself. Given the current situation, guessing few are likely to venture out from there (unless by boat's still operating). Just wondering if it's thinned the crowd there

The crowd is thinned out from the other times I'd been here but I wouldn't call it empty. I counted 30 people out which is pretty thin by this place's standards.

Siege Begins On Managua: 87 Barricades (Tranques) - PHOTOS
Ortega's refusal intensifies the national protest, international carriers could close borders

This is great for Costa Rica tourism, which in my opinion is a better place to be anyway....first time I landed in mangua in the late 80s or 1990 something the airport was shot out with crashed airplanes by the side. I'm like...uh...unstable country warning!

Viva la revolution!

It's so sad to see this happening. I went to Nicaragua in January -- my second surf trip there. It was in the north of the country, near Chinendaga. Stayed at La Bahia and it was great. A fun break with relatively few people. It was definitately away from hotels, restaurants and other businesses but you get plenty of relaxation and much more interaction with the locals -- even with my so-so Spanish. I feel for them and hope this all ends well.

I'm always amazed when I visit Central American countries in which the U.S. has historically meddled at how kind the people are toward Americans with no animosity, at least that I've encountered. Many of them have a hardscrabble life, made even harder by government by dictatorship and corruption.

Viva la revolution is right. The people deserve better than what they are getting out of their government.

Just got back.  Staying at Hacienda Iguana in Tolla, we were not affected other than the drive over from Managua on June 1.  It took 4.5 hours versus 2.5 hrs due to multiple roadblocks.  We ended up chartering a flight from Tolla back to Managua on a puddle jumper to avoid the drive as we heard the conditions on the roads had worsened.  If I ever go back, I will probably explore this option as it was fairly easy compared to the drive, just a bit more costly.   A lot of surf camps are either shutting down or considering it due to the roadblocks because gas and food not getting through to the coast in addition to the troubles just getting there.  Sad situation, hope they find a resolution soon.

So my contact that has family in Nicaragua and lived there most of her life and still has family there, said that to her count there were 8 more killed over the weekend- including a 12 year old. This again in Grenada 2 more, and 6 in the north part of the country. She said the current count down there is 144 killed.

She also said that it's been widely reported that about 7-8,000 US Marines landed in San Jose Costa Rica over the weekend as well- something that our top notch press corps will not tell you about as it's too important to cover truly importanat things like Stormy Daniels. Sounds like there may be a confrontation coming or just a show of strenghth with a demand for Ortega to step down before we come in and take care of business- will see what happens- dictator's like Ortega get drunk with power and wealth and re not known for making wise decisions.....so we'll see....keep you all posted if I hear more as you certainly will not hear a lick on this from the likes of CNN....

AA is cancelling flights to and from Managua. Ortega's security forces on the offfensive in Managua going after the barricades and activists meeting them with home made mortars, slingshots, and other weapons. Over 70% of the roads are blocked by barricades.

The shit is getting real.

AA canceled only 2 flights that had a scheduled overnight layover for both the plane and the crew.  All other service from MIA to MGA continues as scheduled for now.

The news I read said they were suspended until June 19. Guess the news it is pretty unreliable coming out of the country in its current state.

Edit: Yeah I see what you are saying, I just read it on a different site and they echoed what you just said... that it was only two of the flights on the schedule being cancelled until June 19th and that all else are continuing.

Socialism, Marxism, dictatorship, excessive centralized power never works out.  What a shame.  Did a trip down there 15 years ago and it felt safer than Palm Bay.  Mass exodus is next.

That is a lot of risk for a tide specific wave outside of the good wind zone where you only get one guaranteed session a day.

Ortega, Somoza, Nicaragua, El Salvador. Rinse repeat. Its a playbook. Republicans in office, CIA on the ground.

New puppet on the way. Ollie is NRA....load the boat....you know where to offload. Just dodge the Brazilians. Should be a good time, World Cup and all.

Good way to thin the herd. Dawn patrol at Red River was looking like Waikiki at rush hour.

Masaya, 15 miles from Managua, has kicked out the government and proclaimed itself self-governing.  It had been strongly Sandinista.

The Pope has sent a new ambassador.
