Alright so here is the story,

I showed up to 67th street Rockaway to go for a florida style grovel surf and the waves turned out to be full on mini trestles out there (except the water was 55). Anyway you will see in the video at the 37 second mark my right knee get tucked underneath my body with my foot trapped on my board. I havent been surfing much lately so I am assuming maybe my legs werent as strong as they usually are to be able to keep my body and board undercontrol. Either way I felt/heard a pop and instant warmth around the area andddd I had alot of trouble getting home.

in the video below is every wave in order from this 20 minute session.

After thorough review of your video, I'm sorry to say..... Amputation should be scheduled

Dude, so you heard a pop, and could barely walk?  Don't be a dumbass and go see an orthopedist

btw.... I once had my knee get "stuck" under me laying into a "turn" off a closeout section.... experienced the same symptoms.

I had a microfracture of my tibia in my knee socket

Usually when its a pop its either an MCL or ACL tear. Get an MRI.

Have an Ortho appointment scheduled for this coming thursday and will get that MRI I'm assuming. reason for not getting one yet is that here in NYC it takes weeks to get into a specialists office as apposed to a day in FLorida.

YouTube.  Nice energetic video, painful outcome.  The pop is bad news (my last popping noise was neck), but best wishes with the orthopedist(s).

Thank you! yeah also the fact that it still hasnt healed at all is concerning.

hoping for just some physical therapy and no surgery.

I "popped" my MCL and my knee was on fire for days. I did the ACL and went to work the next day, yes, it hurt and was a little swollen, but nothing like the MCL. You could have done the LCL in the back too.

The lateral and medial collateral ligaments are usually only stretched , and will heal over time . If it's your ACL that has ruptured then you have a problem , not everyone needs this fixed , but most do . Only an MRI and your Ortho Doc can help you make that choice . If you don't have insurance , ask a MRI center what there cash price is , should be around $350.

Seems obviously worth an assessment.  My last knee injury (turned out to not need treatment) at least allowed me to limp around, pretty high milage even if low speed and no driving or swimming for a few days.

Last month I had an MRI on my knee and yesterday doctor said no mechanical damage. Just OMD...old man disease.... Lose weight and diet! WooHoo! I can do that.

Sorry about your knees, or anyone's knees. It took me to go over age 50 to finally have poor knees, so never really knew how important they were! LOL

This is why I am glad I never did airs ... what goes up, must come down combined with the bigger they are, the harder they fall. And let's not forget the adage, gravity is a bitch.

Kids, stay grounded. It's not as sexy but if you want to be surfing at 58 with no knee pain, then stay fluid and try to surf like Claude Codgen or Gerry Lopez.

Trust me, it works.

My dad told me when I was 17 and he was 51 that I would not be surfing when I "grew up".

Well, here I am, 58 and jonesin every time it's glassy and over chest high. And damn glad I didn't try airs!

P.S. no laybacks either. Pure knee grinders.

It always seems like the injuries happen on the smaller days.

the last time I heard a 'pop 'in my ankle, my foot was so contorted that I was looking directly at the bottom of my foot instead of the top. I had to drag myself up the beach to my car and debate going to the hospital or suck it up and go to the Slipknot concert I had tix to....Slipknot won out (not a good decision), and now 2 surgeries and a couple years later, it's still not fixed and they want to go back in there a 3rd time.

Dude, I'm a doctor, and I'm here to tell you - get to a REAL doctor (I'm a PhD, not THAT kind of doctor ). I heard that pop after a surf session and couldn't walk - turns out I tore my meniscus. Surgery was very successful and I'm fine 10 years out still.

I'm not a Dr. but I have torn all of this. If i was betting I would say an ACL tear, possibly some posterior meniscus damage. Meniscus rehab sucks as you cannot put weight on it for several weeks plus growth in that area is a trickle speed due to lack from blood flow. Honestly with a decent brace you can have stability even without the ACL, a few opt not to repair it. If you're still having a decent amount of pain a week out you probably have meniscus damage.
