Thanks for the kind words...... I finally switched from a manual lens to a latest generation,
Sony 100-400 GM. Fast autofocus & the full frame sensor allows for lots of cropping. I
miss the reach of the old Canon 500mm but am happy with the results. I've only had it
about three weeks. Sorry about the color..... I just can't help myself........ ;-)

You've made what's possibly the best available choice of lens and camera. Electronic viewfinder has advantages. Nikon may be catching up, Fuji worth checking. (I'm suspicious of Canon still staying away from in-body image stabilization). Panasonic is good for video and has a very good camera body for stills. Olympus for compact equipment, great image stabilization, and relatively affordable lenses, but image size is limited to 5184 x 3888 (a bit under 20 megapixels).

My last Canon 5D dropped a mirror & then I went mirrorless with Panasonics.
Switched to full frame with the Sony A7R & now with an A7III & A7RIII.
The autofocus in the latest generation has bee very good. Also the dynamic
range is like magic.

I shoot RAW & the file surfer/wave looked black but when I opened Camera Raw in PS
I could bring out all of this detail using graduated filter adjustments. That was on the
A7III & the RIII has even greater dynamic range.....

I'm bought into Olympus, a terrific travel camera and whose RAW (actually rather processed) can be tweaked into decent dynamic range with Lightroom's shadow and highlight sliders. Experience is to expose for highlights; plenty of detail will be lurking in the shadows--but you can't do anything about overexposed highlights. In gardens, it's the "white flower problem." Opening up your surfer and wave is typical. It's what you can expect.
If I were starting now, it would be Sony, with a look at the horrifically expensive new Nikon. But it'll be a few years until Nikon has lenses to take advantage of the big new lens mount. Both Nikon and Canon are emphasizing the advantages of lenses with big (or enormous) rear elements. Not knowing anything about lens design, I can't comment, but both of them seem pretty confident about serious improvements in lens performance.
Anyway, I'm a clumsy amateur. There are some great photogs around who really know the craft. I doubt that any of them will kvetch about your crisp colors
.
BTW, you're getting nice details in the whitewater, which tends to be a white or yellowish mess.

I don't know art, I only know what I like...

BTW, much props to the heavy weight skillfully throwing his weight around.
