14@17 is better suited for Waimea than Pipeline....

Waimea buoy is 5 @20 , but the next buoy out is already 11 @16 , all from the NNW . Wish it had more west in it , we will see as sunrise is in the next 60 min or so , I'm guessing closeout bombs

It's on and it looks good . Kelly is up in a few heats. He got some nice Backdoor tubes in warm up , more west should show as this swell builds into massive by end of day.

Kelly moves on easy. Still looks good out there , he is a contender .The waves continue to get better as the day moves on

And Medina gets over-scored again. The kid has talent, the judges shouldn't help him out with scoring too. Theres no way that barrel he had at backdoor was over .5 point better than Jordy's backdoor barrel.

IMO Medina earned his title and the Pipe Masters on his own merit. The guy caught more great waves consistently throughout the contest.

I watched Kelly lose that heat. Sometimes its the waves, sometimes its the timing and sometimes its both.

Brazilians had a rap about their style a while back. Gabby has no such issues. In comparison with the other title contender left, Julian, his approach to the heavy waves seemed almost playful in comparison. Beyond that if he stays focused, which somehow seems to be an issue for him, who is better than he is in one on one heats?

Kelly could have beat Julian for sure. He seemed like he just got too busy. He was probably so happy to be there knowing he could win it he over-amped. Kelly versus Gabby in the final would have been good.

Kelly took some insane late-deep shots at back door and got stuck inside for a bit almost every time. Bad timing for sure. Maybe he was a little over confident after his Houdini maneuver too. If he'd made it through just one of those long fast barrels in his semi heat, the final may have been very different.
