Morning all
so christmas is coming around and my family is getting
together to purchase me a roof rack system for my ford flex

so with that being said, i don't have a clue about what
to get since i've always had some sort of pick up truck.

the vehicle doesn't have any of the side rails so i'm looking
to get either the whole system

what do you all recommend?
thank you and see ya in the water soon enough (insert shaka emoji here)

The Ford Flex is a cool wagon. A friend had one and he had a rack/rail system on it and hauled kayaks. Don't know if it was factory or aftermarket. Might want to try a Ford Flex forum and see what the Ford Flex enthusiasts say works best. I'm sure lots of outdoorsy people use them for skiing, kayaking, surfing, etc. I'm going to be looking for a new surf wagon when my present hauler dies and the Ford Flex is on my "need to look at more" list.

I've recently done my own rack research I'll share. For the base rack your best bet is Yakima or Thule. Go to their website and it'll walk you through the fit guide they have. They seem very similar so it would be personal preference.

It's pretty easy to find used cross bars in towers. It's pretty tough to find the specific foot pads, used, that mount the rack to your specific vehicle. Probably easier to buy those new.

Once you have the basic rack fitted to your car you can either go with one of those aftermarket Yakima, Thule, or Inno surfboard carriers or just pads and a strap. Personally, I prefer basic pads, like from Dakine, that Velcro to the rack, then use a Dakine (or any other) tie down strap. I prefer the 20' from Dakine and strap the board(s) down with 1 strap. With the longer one I feel you can really cinch it down.

Hope this helps.

Factory rails and rack! (Piece of mind. You know it mounts to the car perfectly vs worrying about getting the right "footer")

Then get the sup taxi by Thule. It's called The Sup taxi but I've used it with long and short boards as well as short boards in a board bag.

You see people around town here leaving the sup taxi mount on all the time.
