Holy crap... My condolences go out to his wife who was always very kind to me taking up Bud and hers time. Heavy loss in the surfing community today his words to me exactly "one of the last from the era to still do it "that" way". Truly one of the best of his craft, albeit one of the last to do it so timelessly.
Rest In Paradise Bud.

RIP Bud. Master craftsman and fun guy to hang out with. If anyone has info on any memorial events please post them here. Pulled out my 1969 Gardner transition board a month ago with the intention of fixing dings, sand and polish to show Bud as he had not seen that one of mine.

Buddy Gardner was one of the truly great human beings I have known in my life. In surfboard building and beyond. Bud truly relished being a part of the small community of guys who lived that life.
Few will ever match his level of craftmanship, and I doubt that any simply loved being a boardbuilder like Buddy did. We've just lost one of the sweetest human beings on the planet. Adios Buddy. I miss you already. - Joe Roberts, AKA "JR"

Buddy's memorial and paddleout had fine weather, and a lot of people who wanted to honor this good man and say a last goodbye.
It was good to see Ricky Carroll (RC Surfboards), Ross Houston and his wife Jeannie (Ross started Atlantic Surfing Materials a gazillion years ago, and first started the Surf Expo - also a million years ago). Something I did not know until Buddy's memorial: Ross knew Buddy from high school down in Miami. It was also good to see how many people knew Bud from 40+ years ago, and they still stayed in touch.
Also good to see Balsa Bill Yerkes, and Pete and Debbie Dooley. I wonder how many of the young up and coming groms at the ESA contest being held right there at Paradise Beach Park even had a clue that Natural Art Surfboards, started by Pete Dooley and Scott Busby, was for many years the largest builder of hand crafted surfboards on the east coast. When I worked for Pete in the late 70s Natural Art built 75 - 80 boards a week in the intense summer months. That's when Rich Price and Greg Loehr were doing the shaping. Heading down to the beach for the paddleout, after all the words were spoken, I had the thought that not one of these kids had the slightest clue about the accomplishments of the men who came before them.
I didn't want to go off on a tangent here, but this "historical amnesia" in the surfing world was brought into stark reality seeing all of the fuss going on at the ESA contest area, and the apparent annoyance of at least some of the contest announcers at the momentary interruption the paddleout created. I guess I am a full fledged old guy now for pointing this out, but I'm gonna do it anyhow. I started surfing at 13 in 1967. No internet and no videos. Still, me, and all my little snot nosed surfing pals quickly learned all about "the old guys" who came before us, going back to Duke Kahanamoku. And we revered those guys. Heck, I still do. More than a little ironic I'd say, that we knew more back in the 60s, about who'd preceded us - despite no internet, videos, etc. - while the kids today, with a virtual surfing encyclopedia at their fingertips, are by and large clueless. Okay, I am down off my soapbox.
Adios my friend Buddy Gardner. You are missed by more friends than you knew you had. - DixieBoy, Joe Roberts, aka "JR"
