I surfed my first wave in Costa Rica out front in '81. And both of my longest waves at piggy point south and ended up in front of the Cabinas. If any of you have ever stayed there, knows how gracious a host Miguel Monge is.
Miguel has lung cancer and has about 5 months left. They have a Facebook page if anyone wants to tell him adios before it's too late.

Really sorry to hear that. I spent a good bit of the early 90's at that place, always enjoyed talking to him. Tons of waves, stories, and memories from there. I found a personal FB page (not updated since November?). Post a link if you've got something different.

I went to CR every year from '81 to '05. I'd started at the Cabinas, unannounced, then went on from there. They always had a room saved for me the 2nd week after Easter. This is the site I talk to them (Ronny) on.

1981? Wow. Early bird! I thought I discovered Costa Rica in 1991. LOL.

Sorry about Miguel. That is a bummer. Sounds like most Ticos there are super nice people.

That is cool with the internet you can talk to people from your past like that. Could you imagine in 1981 that you we would have this technology? People talk bad about facebook, but it has hooked up a lot of old friends back together.

That wave behind Vista Hermosa can be scary on big days. I hope the place keeps its cool vibe.

Back in 81 I thought I had found a home. I thought having a cell phone was great technology. I've found people I knew from '72.

That wave was a killer. The first long wave was waist to plex high and just kept going.
The 2cnd was way over head and pitching over me the whole ride, until it dumped me on the beach.

Ronnie has been running the place since early this century. Miguel was all our dad's there. His buddies took him to the olympics last time. There's pics. Now that I know he was sick, those pics take on a whole new story.

That sucks. Cancer sucks. Let's hope it doesn't get all of us.

bummer to hear. knew him from long ways back. mostly stay up north now due to property in Los Pargos, but still make trips back to Hermosa and Barranca as I love the waves and like to reconnect with the wonderful people.

I'd always start in Hermosa then head north to Santa Terresa. Usually 2 weeks after Easter for the deals. I fugged up once and was there the second week. He still found us a room even tho I could over hear a rich Tico trying to get him to kick us out so he could get it.
