Surfing is my main fitness routine. I had to give up beer or I would have to get all new boards to compensate for the new belly.

I haven't even surfed in 2019 yet. Just broke my hand too. That will keep my out of the water until the first of May at the earliest. Work & life has taken over and I'm ready to make drastic changes to get back in the water on the regular. Money doesn't buy happiness or put more time in the day. *end of rant* sorry.

This pattern has also made the offshore fishing conditions crappy as well. At least in the summer it's glassy out there. This 3 to 4 S wind chop ruins all our fun.
may be time for a board sacrifice. |

------------------------- "I remember South Africa in the late 70's, sleeping on the beach at J-bay, smoking ganja with the blacks. On weekends we'd go to the pub in East London to drink beer and fight with the Afrikaners. They liked to fight, I liked to fight. It was a good time" |

2012 was our last truly bountiful year beginning to end. 2018 showed sighns of hope but faded hard in December. 2019 has so far been abysmal.I'd like to see a chart or graph of avg. wave heights through the years.

I've been waiting for a post like this as I've been thinking it for weeks. Some little wind swell events but that's what you expect in between swells in the winter. As far as actual swell this winter season we had the post-Thanksgiving swell (borderline groundswell) then the end of January swell (nearby low blew up a bit more than expected, went groundswell, but was pretty much limited to south FL). Winter Storm Riley was the text book winter system and now it's been over a year and there hasn't been a single proper cold core setup where significant groundswell moves in from offshore. What's this long range model talk btw? I'm seeing a weak attempt at something coming together next week but if I had to guess looks like Caribbean gets a little juice but not FL...

Glad to see other folks obsess about this stuff. I'm eaten up with it.
My take:
Low pressure centers don't seem to move into that sweet spot much any more, between Hatteras and Bermuda. They seem to stay inland and then ride on up the eastern U.S.
I've logged this stuff in some detail. Seems like 5-year cycles on N swells. 5 good years, 5 bad years. Early half of the decades = productive.
Early 1990s -- lotsa solid surf. Ridiculous good in fact.
Late '90s... some but not as much
Early 2000s -- Solid (01-06)
Late 2000s... weaker.
HOWEVER: The 5-year cycle got disrupted in 2010... the first five years should've been good, but they weren't. With some exceptions.
Then 2015-19 has been off... but I sort of expected that.
Here's hoping it turns around again in 2020. Give us a nice 5-year stretch of swell-makers.
Again, I'm talking N/NE swells.

There has been such little surf in the Palm Beach area in the last year that I feel like some kind of poser saying Im a surfer.

Yes we complained so hard the ocean sent some surf! Sunburned. FSJeff yes the lows hitting that sweet spot is super infrequent. Hoping the 5 year cycle observation comes through!
