AA dropped board bag fees! Consider it a small victory to those of us tired of playing the board bag fee lottery at the check in counter. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Since AA is the gateway to Central America for most of us the cost of a surf vacation just got a little cheaper! If anyone wants to head to NICA my offer to take care of 2ndlighters always stands. https://www.foxbusiness.com/industrials/american-airlines-oversize-bag-fees

That is pretty awesome news.

Replace turf grass with native plants that don't need irrigation and synthetic fertilizers or chemicals that can go into our waterways and ocean

It's confusing the way they wrote that part of the article but that length requirement only refers to skis and snowboards.

For surfboards you have to dig a bit into the actual terms @ https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel...ecialty-and-sports.jsp, under watersports boards:

Allowance and requirements
Water sports boards include:

Surfboards
Wakeboards
Wave skis
Boogie boards
Skim boards
Paddle boards
Speed boards
1 bag or case can contain multiple boards and will count as 1 checked item. Keels, kedges, and/or fins must be removed or properly protected to prevent damage to other bags.

Cost
Standard checked bag fees of your destination apply up to 50lbs/23kgs and 126in/320cm (length + width + height) or a $150 fee applies from 51lbs/23kgs to 70lbs/32kgs.

For travel to, through or from Brazil, for tickets issued on or before May 20, 2019, the fee will be:

$42.50 (1st board bag/case)
$85 (2+ board bags/cases)
For tickets issued on or after May 21, 2019, there is no exception for Brazil.

I'm pretty sure United's still letting you carry a boardbag in and out of California airports for free as your one piece of check-in baggage They started it last year.
