I have a new 6'10 Egg shaped by Larry Mayo and it has a 2+1 fin set up. I've never had a 2+1 board, so I would appreciate some suggestions for fins for the board.

pretty stick.... probably go with a 6" fin with a wide base and a narrow tip with medium rake (maybe one of those Greenough fins?)... if you ditch the side bites increase the size of the center fin

I have the 7'4" board and I put in a skinny 7.5" takayama with the fcs little side bites. Works great.

A rainbow tk flex is always a great center fin choice. With side fins, maybe 5 inches, way forward in the box.
No side fins, same tk at 8-9". Of course, they have many other great designs as well
George Greenough was the original high aspect modern fin designer. You can get a dakine signature one from my buddy chuck ames at tru ames fins in santa barbara. He's the only guy george allows to use his name and logo
I can put you in touch with either one

Thank you all for the replies so far! I've been looking at websites for FCS, True Ames, and Rainbow . . . so many fins. I moved out west and did not surf for a bunch of years and all this fin bizness is new to me. So many possible sizes, shapes, and combos - I have not yet learned how all these variable fit together. Back in the day we had one board with glassed on fins and we rode what we brought . . . and we walked to school in the snow, uphill both ways, with no cell phones. ;-)

Sick board. So sick it's probably causing our current wave drought. I have something similar and usually use a 6.5" Volan center, usually closer to the front of the box and 3.7" side bites. All from True Ames. Seems to work pretty good. If you shrink down the side bites, increase the center fin area. 3 similar sized fins works good too. Fun to collect various centers to try different feels. Then again we may never have waves ever again.

I've never even ridden an Egg type shape - just read a bunch and ordered one - I'm hoping it fits the bill. And yeah, it has occured to me that the new board might be to blame for the flat spell. Thank you for the suggestions!

I would go with:

2 of these:
Naked Viking Surf ONO Twin Keel Surfboard Fins, Solid Fiberglass

. BASE: 6.12 inch; HEIGHT: 5.00 inch; AREA: Futures - 22.70 sq inch AREA: FCS - 22.99 sq inch
. FOILING: Flat SeriesIII - The exclusive NVS SeriesIII Foiling is designed to increase laminar flow (Hold), and decrease turbulent flow (Drag). The SeriesIII Foils work on a wider range or angle of attack which means you'll hold more speed through turns. SeriesIII Foiling designed on fluid dynamics research from NASA.
. NVS Ono Hand Foiled Solid Fiberglass Twin Fins (2 fins) with FCS or Futures Style Base
. FIN CONSTRUCTION: Solid Fiberglass that keeps the feel of a glass on fin.
. Designed and Developed in San Diego, CA

One of these in the center fin box:

RFC 5th Finner

Cool board porn.

I have a 7" "california born" rainbow "rake" in my 5'10" mayo roundtail. No side bites. It's fun. Buy what you like, then change it up, don't just keep it as a 2+1. Single fin will change your surfing.

Nice egg! I have a similar board from Larry and prefer to ride it as a single fin using a 7" Greenough 4a fin. That's really a great board that's going to work great no matter what you ride it with. Enjoy!!!

A 7"-7 1/2" Dingpatch "Bonzer " type would go really good. I switch from Rast Keels to that exact single on a custom 6'11" Neilson very channeled roundtail flat out flies off the bottom zero hangups around turns with that fin! yeEw

I second SpinK on the Greenough4a suggestion try a 7". They work well for all ranges of surf. Ride it as a single fin first, when the time comes for sidebites I suggest using some regular SB4s (Futures) or something comparable to a 3.5" fin in FCS. You will find that adding sidebites to an egg will give you a lot of extra hold but that will limit your turning potential from the tail and will start to feel a little sluggish while trimming due to the added drag. Another suggestion is to ride a 6" cutaway with sidebites if you want a more" high performance" feel. Personally wouldn't throw sidebites on until you find the board spinning out in bigger or powerful waves. Have fun experimenting!

Thank you again for all the suggestions and compliments on the board! I went and saw Dennis @ Core Surf and he lined me out with the following set up. Rainbow center at 7" and 3.25" side bites. He suggested using a bigger center fin to ride it as a single fin, but from the comments on this thread it sounds like the one I have might work?

It should work, give it a try. Move the fin around, forward looser, back if you think you're spinning out too much. And don't expect it to feel like a thruster or whatever. It will feel different. Think rails not tail. And Have Fun!

I'm glad dennis took care of you, he is very much a student of the "evolution" of surf gear through different eras. Especially for a young cat.
I lived it.......
That high aspect ratio rainbow flex style fin will work well with the egg displacement hull style board. We always called them "round" boards in santa barbara where greenough first developed them.
I agree: think rails. If you can find pictures of michael peterson riding michael cundith shapes, that's the epitome of those designs.
Michael cundith and George greenough started wilderness surfboards in santa barbara, which is where the round "egg" boards originated
