remember when GP used to surf in his speedo? I wonder if he got his inspiration from Ian Cairns?

Is it just my imagination, or did the local guys have better wave knowledge, style, and equipment than the international tour pros? At least for this contest, this video.

Seriously, Greg Loehr looked light years ahead of everyone. Thanks for posting.

Nice, this is some of the best content on the forum. Loehr's basically mapping the shortboard rev while he's riding, it seems. Great footage.

Yep, Greg basically "owning it" in that vid.... but I'm sure guys from OZ and SA were probably thinking "these waves suck"

Very impressive.

This was the first of what will be many videos From Jerry Law. The Florida Surf Museum attained Jerry's films and had them professionally digitized. We are working on editing parts 2-4 of the 77Fla Pro. Stay tuned!

Barry Wolfe and Greg Loehr were the top 2. What's with all the cheater fives back then?

Then again, in the 1976 first ever NKF held at "shark pit", the top award went to a very young Matt Kechele for his 20 second hang 5. So that must have been the thing.

Roray Russell dicked Bruce Walker.

I am saddened to think I was 17 and my memory of that time was that we were pretty good. Not even close to today. Heck Shaun Tomson won the world title in 1977 and Peter Townend the year before and they looked like amateurs.

Painful to watch.

You have to take into account that this was over 40 years ago. Today's surfing didn't just appear out of a vacuum. Surfing progresses over time by constantly improving performance and equipment. The surfboards of the time still had very straight tail rocker because they it was thought that it helped the boards go faster. But the straight rocker caused the boards to hang up during hard turns. It wasn't until later that they learned that proper tail rocker made the board turn better and go faster.
