I am at a loss for words.

pretty much. just awful... I know the dude is often seen as a great guy or a major a-hole, but it's pretty clear why. When I was a grom I would watch his segment on Billabong's "Surf into Summer" repeatedly....

Someone call a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHmbulance. I feel for the guy. Had no skills and had to work a job that made him get salt encrusted and or wet. He was a bit of an ass to others from all the stuff I've seen about him over the decades.

The guy ripped, had access to endless swells and was able to get paid to do what I have to work to get to do. I'd trade places with any of them.

I can't even imagine going thru this. Attempting suicide then coma for months then wake up. Typically, is the person still depressed and want to die from waking up? Is he under suicide watch? Any experts in the field on this? Its very sad. I wish he would have gotten help before. We have all had friends who have done this. Please if you know someone going thru depression, talk to them. Help them.

It looks like his brain took a beating. If he does make it back, it will be a long, long haul.

Not trying to be insensitive, but it doesn't appear as though he has the fine motor skills left to harm himself at this point. I had a family member that had a brain injury due to cardiac arrest and the lack of function to do anything on their own is heartbreaking to see. Just speculating but he appears to have hypoxic brain injury. Really sad to see this update.

Suicide prevention is especially pertinent currently.

He was hurting and his way of being an asshole was proof. His suicide attempt was his mentally ill idea of a solution to end the pain, not solve the more problematic issue of the cause of the pain and how to live with it. There are lessons here for the people who watch and learn, but its not as simple as an asshole finally checked out.

Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps The Score is an excellent book source for understanding the body, mind trauma connection.

Description:
The Body Keeps the Score is the inspiring story of how a group of therapists and scientists - together with their courageous and memorable patients - has struggled to integrate recent advances in brain science, attachment research, and body awareness into treatments that can free trauma survivors from the tyranny of the past.

New insights into our survival instincts explain why traumatized people experience incomprehensible anxiety and numbing and intolerable rage, and how trauma affects their capacity to concentrate, to remember, to form trusting relationships, and even to feel at home in their own bodies.

I think the lesson here is don't attempt to take your own life. There is only one person that determines when its your time to jump off this merry-go-round.

Please don't talk shit on Sunny. Mental health and depression is a real unfortunate bitch and anyone who's been around this understands. BTW, he would have kicked your ass in the surf or on the land, you f_cking ham and eggers!
