Headed out to Southern California (Anaheim) for a one day meeting. Bringing the wife and planning on hanging out Friday and Saturday and taking a flight back Saturday night. I've never been out there before and was hoping to surf, but looks like its gonna be pretty flat. We are planning on renting a car and looking for suggestions? Anyone have any ideas for food, hikes, stuff to see etc?

closet beach will be Seal Beach, cool little area with some surf as well. Breaks inside the inlet sometimes but Pier looks to be more of shorebreak on the S side.

Too bad you don't get to surf, things to do...2 decent hikes in the area Black Star Canyon (waterfall) or Weir Canyon to Yucca Ridge to Deer trail was a nice loop about 6 miles...GO EARLY!!! as it is busy on the weekends with limited parking, I think it was $5 to park (bring single dollars) bring water, sunscreen etc...OR...head to Venice Beach rent 2 bikes and ride the sidewalk up to SM pier and back. If you can do both you will get a taste of the ocean scene and some elevation which coming from FL is a nice change. Taco Nazo was good for fish tacos in nearby Bellflower.

Don't pass on the opportunity to get Maytag'd in the Wedge's shore break. It'll cleanse your soul

Anaheim? Get on the Newport freeway, take it to the Pier, rent a stick at Blackie's, walk up the beach and choose a corner breakin' somewhere amongst the jetties for 20+ blocks- (Blackie's still there?!)

Take a drive into the mountains. If you've lived in Florida your whole life, you need to see something different. Big Bear/Big Bear Lake is a nice drive and destination, but, it is pretty much a full day. Then go to a farmer's market (they are real local produce, nuts, etc, sold by the folks who grow it, not like Florida).

You can probably find a long board wave at San Onofre and soak up the surf vibe there, it's a really fun place to hang. The drive from Newport to San Clemente on PCH is kind of neat with tons of places to eat. Schwack's in Dana Point is a good place to grab lunch. Laguna has lots of really cool shops that your wife would probably enjoy and also some cool art galleries. If you are really ambitious go all the way to San Diego and check our La Jolla, it's a fun area to walk, eat and hang out. San Diego Zoo is tops. If you can catch the chimpanzee lunch time it's the funniest thing you will every see with the chimp fighting over a burlap sack of bananas.

If you go to LA county, check out the South Bay and rent bikes to ride on the strand or drive up into Malibu and hit Tuna Canyon/the beaches. Both places are beautiful. Torrance, Hermosa and Redondo more fun and less touristy than Venice/Santa Monica in my opinion. If you go to Malibu, you've gotta go to Malibu Seafood. It is located right on the water and at the base of a really dope little trail. For coastal hiking in Orange County, check out Crystal Cove State Park. That isn't too far from Anaheim and after you hike, you are within striking distance of a number of fun beach towns.
