EXCELLENT recommendation, Panda! The author lived on Merritt Isl, too I believe
prior to his death.

I have the privilege of having access to many of the spots mentioned in the book. I've visited the graveyard at Ft Kissimmee and seen several settler homesteads along the Kissimmee River. The Kissimmee Prairie looks as it did 100 years ago and the damn mosquitoes will light you up when the sun dips below the horizon. Ahh Florida!

I bought a couple of books from the man himself in Sebastian about ten years ago. He had a table at the art fair. RIP PDS.

Restoring Kissimmee Prairie has taken a good deal of work. Old aerial photos, among other things, showed that trees and sabal palms had encroached quite a bit into the Prairie. The state park and Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area (straddles the Turnpike between SR 60/Yeehaw and the next exit north) are both worth visiting.

I read all his books awhile back. They are good. He is a good story teller. R.I.P.

Maxy sold their property along highway 60 and there is talk of development, so there is a chance there will be a neighborhood north of the Prairie Preserve. More fertilized yards, that's just what the K river and Lake O need.
