The biggest problem with nuclear up to this point has been the back up diesel generators that can only go for a week. If a tsunami comes and knocks every part offline, you have a melt down. The solution for these smaller reactors is a passive cooling pond that doesn't require pumps. This seems like the solution to bring nuclear back into the solution.

There's been plenty of good approaches to nuclear power floating around, including thorium reactors. The electric power industry in the US is probably badly spooked buy the last batch of new plants that proved too expensive to continue construction, so all (except for one or two?) were abandoned in fairly early stages of construction. Right now it's financially much safer to build a gas plant or solar farm.

I recall that there was great promise with the molten salt process too.

Given our current scamocracy, not sure I trust anyone to run it. Maybe the military?

Now, I'm thinking that the following had already been mentioned on another thread but, , , ,

The whole, main, reason why only large scale fission was persued was because none of the other technologies produced any/enough weapons grade "stuff". Plain and simple.

When Bamboo weighs in on that we'll have a definitive answer.

Advanced small reactors are certainly being considered and should be part of our diversified energy plan. The NRC can do a good job if funded properly and if you let engineers run the projects. The Naval Reactors group would do an awesome job, but probably stupid expensive to the end user.

Stupid expensive compared to natural gas, which only ever factors in the price of extraction.

And doesn't factor the eventual scarcity. I wonder how long "nookaler" can go given the finite supply of fissiles?
