Sure, I'll surf, but for whatever reason I'm just not very comfortable in the open ocean, farther than a swim from shore. I'm not a big fan of snorkeling, and the thought of scuba diving creeps me out.

But I'll snorkel, reluctantly, and usually after a beer, even as creepy as I find the experience.

Finally adorn with all the gear that I need, slathered up with sunscreen and one of those new expensive full-face snorkel masks purchased just for this experience, on the one-count of 3-2-1, this friend shows up to circle the boat.

Ehh... I'll just stick to drinking beer.

And yes, I before you tell me that Nurse sharks are as friendly as a litter of newborn kittens, I'm quite convinced that this adorable one wanted to eat me.

Many decades ago, , , , we used to spend all day at Sombrero Light.

Ya, just push the nurses away, until you have to start pushing harder and harder! Every once in a while a "linebacker" would show up and THEN, , , , it was time to get in the boat and move to Coffins Patch.

My brother got 'chased' out of the water by a barracuda there and 20 years later he still hasn't lived it down. I give him sh!t about it every chance I get. Especially in front of my nephews.

I swam over to the light from where all the snorkel tour boats were parked to see if there was anything interesting hanging around the light. There were two big barracudas under there. They followed me all the way back out to the boats, just kind of shadowing me over my shoulder. I'd turn and they'd just freeze and looked all innocent. That nurse shark looks like a puppy dog panhandling for treats. I was mucking around the patch reefs in the channel off of Big Pine once and got run off of a patch by a barracuda. It really bowed up on me with some kind of fins-flaired open-mouthed face-on display. I swam up and grabbed my SUP paddle and went back with that to try to move it away. I really wanted under that ledge. Well, the fish was not impressed with me waving a paddle in its face. We had to go find another patch.

A biologist friend of mine explained that one reason cudas will shadow people in the water, is it offers them camouflage from prey that's looking up.

That's been my assumption about the ones that have followed me around, usually quartering just out of my line of site. Figured they were using me as a screen or distraction for stuff they would like to eat.
