It's a exercise in doomsday prepping. You can't include gas or propane.

I came up with the $1500 because the goal zero lithium battery with the inverter is already at 1000. http://www.goalzero.com/shop/p...rtable-power-station/

I would also add the 12v plug in cooler http://www.amazon.com/Koolatro...=gateway&tag=ogl02-20

Then I would buy two 12 volt solar panels from Costco and that would about tap out the entire budge.

The idea is to have a powe source without fuel, a refridgerator and maybe even a wall unit ac to make a tent cool. I liked the idea of this because it gives you an idea of what to do if cat 5 came 80 west and reduced us to the stone ages.

I use this set-up...(2) 12 V Car Batteries one charging one in use. A multi-socket patch cord with inverter but you will only be able to power 2 large Box fans and charge some phones, play a radio, small stuff.....No way you can get the start up AMPS to run the smallest of AC's, 12V cooler would be nice not required. I still have not used my generator (still in the box) as it is easier and cleaner to use this setup for short power outages.

You can soft start an AC to reduce the startup amps. Here's one for a small RV unit: https://www.hutchmountain.com/...p/106550125/category=0 Still, the run amps will eat your battery alive. A 13K Btu AC will draw about 10 amps. A Yeti 1250 has 100 amp hours so you'll get somewhat less than 10 hrs run out of a full charge just running the AC. Some #'s to play with, YMMV. Where's wavegeek (WG)? He's done this stuff. (What, no board in the Bahamas kit?)

I can't find out how long three 100 watt 12v panels would take to charge the yeti. Their website says six hours and I don't know if it can used while its charging during the hottest part of the day.

A 100 watt panel puts out about 5 amps in perfect conditions (pointed directly at the sun, no clouds, etc). So 3 panels at about 6 hours of good sun / day would give you 90 amp/hrs. Not accounting for loss during charging on the negative side and some output during less that ideal conditions (morning / evening) on the positive side, about a full charge under ideal conditions, or less otherwise. And you couldn't run anything else without decreasing the charge. More panels needed to run stuff and charge at the same time. All thumbnail calcs. Caveat emptor.

I haven't done the budget part yet, but along with a solar charger... a portable ham radio transceiver, a satellite phone (subject to budget), a portable marine-band transceiver, some duct tape, water-purifying life-straws, tarps (rain/shade/freshwater collection), beef jerky... sandals w/ a protective bottom (nail-resistant), mosquito nets

12V AC/DC thread This thread has all the info you need for low amp 12v frig...seems you can have a very nice one that draws min AMP but you will pay $$$ for it. I "think" the best way is to keep it simple, Get the HF 100 watt solar panel for $180.00, (2) 12V Lead batteries, inverter, (2) box fans and then decide how much you want to spend on a 12V refrig. One battery is enough just keep rotating them as needed on the charger. The HF panels have come a long way.

What you are creating is a post hurricane residency...get the solar panel and the items listed above, get a good tent with a large amount of airflow (most important!!!), start collecting rain barrels, have a manual water purification system, stock up on Freeze Dried Foods (Mountain House has some decent ones), tons of can food, spam, dried meats, canned fish, etc......It would be great to distribute this "kit" to the Bahamas...After Katrina , FEMA trailers were brought in...being an island that would seem to be off the table..

^^ LifeStraw, great product, one can last up to 3 years/4000 liters of water, If you have multiple rain barrels, you "could" have all the drinking water you may need for a few weeks, months, depending on rain amounts (just fill them before a Cane strike). As for more comfort...this is getting the best reviews for Tent sized AC using improved swamp cooler tech - Google "MightyKool A 12-Volt 120/12-volt Converter Bundle" It appears the original budget of $1500 would cover everything you would need to live Off the Grid for a while. Pic of my cooling system and airy tent I used at St. Andrews during Hurricane Barry. I was solo so opted for a small fan, should have brought the two box fans, lesson learned..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Hey Burry Baggies. Where can I give you or your son some coin for past or future relief efforts?

I don't think there's anything left to hang a hammock on, so add poles too.
