Well, after 12 years away I'm going to try surfing again. I quit because of the skin
cancers (melanoma) and have missed it. Not to do anything easy, I will be going back
in the form of "Stand Up Surfing". The rub being that I have never paddled a SUP &
the board that I purchased, by SUP standards, is thin & thin for beginner-SUP
standards. Soooooooo, I will be paddling in the river trying to learn my balance,
train my leg muscles (I'm usually sitting in a kayak or outrigger canoe) and building
up my endurance.

As long as I stayed away from the beach I could maintain my resolve... not to surf.
Photographing this last swell put the hook back in me so here goes nuttin!!

Thanks Burry........

yep, I have a can of "Monster Paint" for the nose but I doubt if I will
need it any time soon as I'll be paddling in the river just to get my balance
and leg muscles in shape......... ;-)

Waiting for winds to go offshore for my first beach outing.

First day paddling THIS board and it is more stable than the 10' that I demoed. Didn't
get wet once........ The "beach" is soft sand so you can place the nose in shallow water
and then back out. The paddling out on your knees & standing up is more difficult at almost 70.......

Hodad good to see you getting back into it. TOW. Time On Water. It is a good work out and when you get to the waves you will have a great big smile on your face. Twelve years without a wave I hope on that day someone gets your picture, cause your face will have a great big smile on it. Great meeting you and have a great time on the board. Mike

We've had strong NE -E winds since I got the board. Doing well at Ballard & waiting to see what the SW to W winds give me later this week.

No surf pix as I don't take my equipment out in salt spray....... ;-)

I thought I recognized that "break". Mrs tom and I stop there on our Sunday AM bike rides. Will keep an eye out for that potato chip you're paddling.

Tom, I am amazed how quickly my legs tire but shouldn't be. When we surf we stand up for 10 - 30
seconds here in Florida. My ankles and arches start to go & there goes my balance. All I want is an
almost flat day with maybe 1 to 2 footers for my first try. I have no idea what it will feel like NOT
pushing up from a prone position....... ;-)

Winter is coming, plenty of "ideal" days on the way. You know Ross? (clfsurf.com) He paddles his sup with a paddle some days, uses it like a surfboard other days. Or even a kneeboard... It's all fun. (I'd put the pic in but it's probably too big.) Pic

Well, I went out today at 2nd light..... almost flat, 1-2 and my legs felt like rubber! As soon as I turned
parallel with the beach I ate it...... ;-). More time needed on flat water...... ;-(

Ha! I groveled some shorepound for lunchbreak. Sounds like we both got skunked. On the other hand, we both got wet. Win-win I'd say.

I paddled the flatwater Hobie this morning at Ballard Park and had no issues
with the Red Tide breathing problem .......

Good for you, I am recovering from total knee replacement and will make my first attempts on my SUP--in a few months!

Hope that you heal quickly. I sold the SUP (surfing) because knee paddling leads to
my knee swelling and it won't straighten for a week. So now I'm trying to surf again but
the first try was dismal. My back is so stiff that I can't pop up without stalling the board.
I was also sore for a week. Geeeeees that 13 years off took their toll.

Add those years to the time you took the pause and it adds up--my back does the same!
