"A top US official told a group of fossil fuel industry leaders that the Trump administration will soon issue a proposal making large portions of the Atlantic available for oil and gas development, and said that it is easier to work on such priorities because Donald Trump is skilled at sowing "absolutely thrilling" distractions, according to records of a meeting obtained by the Guardian."

Already the Trump administration is moving to permit a handful of private companies to start using seismic surveys in the Atlantic, a controversial practice in which air guns shoot loud blasts into ocean waters to identify oil deposits. Some scientific studies suggest that seismic surveys can harm or potentially kill marine creatures, including dolphins, whales, fish and zooplankton.

The seismic surveys could commence as early as this year, in coastal waters anywhere from Cape May, New Jersey, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, but first they require final approval from the interior department.

I was right.

Drill baby, drill. Well, not really.

But, the nasty core of all of this "petroleum" development is that the world is currently dependent on "oil". Ya, ya, "Alternative energy" and all of that. But, until "all that" becomes substantially less expensive than "oil" we are stuck with oil! Emotions don't really play too well against economics. Wang Lee, in the middle of China, could give a hoot about "warming".

A big part of the economics of oil centers on "infrastructure"; there are trillions of dollars invested in oil production and until all of that is "written off", we are generally stuck with it. There are more than a few "investors" who could care less about environmental issues as long as their "yields" are sufficient enough.

Then again, we are possibly on the edge of another deep, world wide, recession. Oil prices could crash and that may provide greater inroads for "alternatives". And, on the side, who here is familiar with and/or knows more about this "derivative" thing? I've read that the whole derivative thing is plenty shaky and that the total amount of "flaky derivatives" is greater than the GNP of the entire world!!??

I've surfed many times covered in oil in Santa Barbara.
All oil wells leak. The u.s. is already the largest producer of petroleum. These foolish initiatives have been repeatedly stopped by the states effected.
As to herr chumpf's ability to baffle stupid goobers with bullshit: it's the only thing he's actually good at.
