I'm no biologist, but I think there might be a better time to open red snapper season than when every fish is bursting with fat sacks of roe and milt. Your tax and other dollars have been allocated to NMFS/SAFMC/Dept. of Commerce/FWRI and the fishery has been closed for TEN YEARS for them to STUDY RED SNAPPER BIOLOGY.
You would think they'd have a teensy lil bit of insight into spawn timing?
100% of fish I gutted this week were ready to blow. Commercial and rec season is wide open the full breadth of a waxing and full moon phase...of course these fish will be fornicating. I don't understand the logic.
There are way more big fish now, which is great. But this is quite an oversight that just doesn't bode well for the credibility of the resource managers or the health of the fish they are RESPONSIBLE for protecting.
Just an FYI, this is not an argument about rec vs commercial. This is about harvesting mass numbers at the wrong time of year. If they're spawning now, which regulators SHOULD KNOW BY NOW, then harvest by EVERYONE should be delayed until they've had a chance to release gametes for the year. This is BASIC FISHERIES BIOLOGY.
This is management sleeping on the job.
This is not a sustainable management strategy. Please pardon me for expecting more out of PhD fisheries biologists and statisticians being paid by we the people.

My suggestion to whoever wrote that (obviously not FK, as it is legible)

is to go get your degrees and then get involved if you can do a better job.

I said it would be ironic if they are now spawning at a different time due to climate change.

If you ask me- they should close all fishing. Period.

For the 1st time ever, I agree with FK's post 100%...... While I'm pretty pro-conservation for a fisherman, The management of Red Snapper has been retarded. With the year long closings, why the hell do they toss a bone with a "mini-season" in the summer while they spawn?!? it makes no sense

Not only are biologists aware of what months highly desirable fish spawn, they know exactly what time of day certain aggregations are most actively spawning. And no, it has nothing to do with the moon as your friend seems to think.
Know what else biologists know? What the sugar industry is doing to our freshwater, what waterfront luxury developments are doing to the intracoastal.

Guess who else knows when humans are most likely to purchase fuel, tackle, beer, etc etc? The industries that sell those things. Money will always win out.

The best thing your friend your friend can do is refuse to participate, and tell his buddies and the state exactly why.

I realize that's hard to do though. Still inform the state that hey, you're willing to go out after September in the VAS conditions and be happy with a slower bite. Try to get his buddies to express the same. If the state knows they'll still get their money, they might change it.

In any case, it's not the biologists who are dumb, nor the state. It's greed on the part of the state and businesses, and alaziness/unsportin
