Why would a sitting president or a presidential candidate offer a prospective pardon to someone for underlying acts committed by that president or candidate, when that president or candidate denies any wrongdoing? The cult following continues.

Co-conspirators.

Pardons are for anything a sitting President wants them for. That being said, it is a crime to offer something of value in exchange for a crime or illegal act, i.e. perjury or obstruction.

To prove that he hasn't engaged in any wrongdoing will cost somewhere north of a million dollars in attorneys' fees. Being innocent or right doesn't make the process painless.
