Special price drop for 2ndlighters. I need the cash. --  $360.

In pretty good condition for being over 50 years old. No delam or soft spots, only a couple of dings that I fixed with suncure, it is now watertight and ready for the water. Not sure if you can tell from the pics but it has a stringer that tapers getting smaller in width as it approaches the nose.

9' 6" x 21 3/4" x (approx) 2 1/4" - 2 1/2"

I'd love to keep it as a piece of history but I don't have the room.  Can deliver as far North as Melbourne. Thanks for looking.

I have a Challenger Eastern that looks pretty similar, especially the fin. Challenger Eastern was a east coast offshoot of Challenger (Cali). The Eastern was quite possibly shaped by Jim Phillips in Asbury Park NJ (or there abouts) and they had a young fin guy/musician working in the shop named Bruce Springsteen! Guess he ultimately liked music a bit more than the board building.... Nice boards, somebody buy it!

That's a Jim Phillips if I've ever seen one.  I can feel a certain character his boards have in the OP.  And its a good character, one of the best in surfing.

Challeger Surfboards were made by Bobby Thomas in Pacific Beach CA.  He started as one of the production shapers at G and S He was also doing some of his own boards He had a very creative mide and his own ideas on design that did not fit in well with doing production.  He was offer the opertunity to buy Challenger from a business man that really wasn't into surfing.  He took that Name and made it into one of the best Board names of the mid 1960's. Both Mike hynson and Skip Frye had a lot of respect for Bobby and his skill with a Planer.  A lot of people will also tell you he was a pain in the ass to work for since he was a perfectionist.  Challeger East was an off shot of Challeger. It wasa way for them to overcome the high cost of shipping.  C East was  run By Tinker and Tinker is the one who tought Phillips how to shape. Jim will tell you he owes Tinker a lot for showing him how to really get the most out of a blank and skil 100 planer.   Unfortunily Challager did not survive the era of the under ground shaper.  Many of the big name builders didn't

"Challenger" was made in Calif. Thomas and West and several others like Diffenderfer were involved. in early '64 or so......Carl "Tinker " West came east to NJ he opened a factory here in Neptune NJ (He also was a big influence with this guy from Freehold NJ West let his band practice in the shop he was his manager for a while too, his name is Bruce something .. Springsteen as I recall). Well anyway, The factory out here on the right coast was called "Challenger EAST" not Challenger.
2 different animals like a Hog and a Pig pork but not the same. Jimi Philips "Boy Genius" as we call him worked at Challenger East as well as Surfboards East in Lakewood NJ for a guy named Tommy McNeil. Philips learned to shape from Tinker and honed his trade as he went along.
if the decal on the board said Challenger East or Challenger Eastern then it may have been shaped by Jimi or one of several other shapers there were in the factory.  Most likely this board was shaped by Bobby Thomas, or Tinker West, or Diffenderfer, or someone else from the factory.
