That seems a bit high for magazines.  Never new they were collectable.

Here's an eBay listing for a collection of the first 7 years for $1000. Highly doubt he'll get that bit I've got 23 years of the mags. http://m.ebay.com/itm/261796167078?nav=SEARCH

They are in good condition. Two of the magazines have a little damage to the cover but everything else is great. Volumes one, two, and three are hardbound. There is a gap between volume 19 number 2 and volume 20 number 5. The most recent magazine in the collection is volume 23 number 4.

The Journal sells back issues pretty cheap, too, so a buyer could probably fill in the missing issues to have a complete set.

There's collecting and there's real collecting... If you had Vol. 1-No. 1 not in the bound volume, you'd have a collector's item. That mag. alone could fetch a couple hundred at least.

The first 3 years in the bound version are basically worthless when claiming to have a "complete" collection. Also, even their value is diminished with the dust jackets (the glossy paper book covers) missing. Everyone wants the un-bound original item - if they're collecting.

Also - if any issues were bought retail in a store, it diminishes their value as well. They have the bar code and pricing printed on the covers which subscription and back issue purchases don't. Collectors look for that kind of thing...

Only reason I mention this is that I have every issue BUT Vol.1-#1 and had to buy the bound book to get it - but will always be on the lookout for the real deal...

Volume 1 number 1 is the holy grail of TSJ. I understand my magazines aren't perfect from the collectors point of view, which is why they are $450 instead of the $1500-$2500 I've seen complete unbound sets sell for. I bought these to read and enjoy, I've done that and now a board has caught my eye so I'm unloading them.

Did not mean to diminish your collection. With all my blathering, I should have noted that $450 is an excellent price for all you have...

After all, as you said, TSJ is about reading and enjoying first and formost - about the only surf mag that that can be said about.

Good luck...
