Any recommendations on my first surfcasting rod/reel combo? What length is best for MB area (12ft?)? An avid fisherman I know told me to just pick up something from Walmart. Is this recommended? (Trying to keep costs down as I'm just trying it out.) Thx. |

Imo, grab an ugly stick for the rod (at very least a 7'6") and a good capacity shimano or penn reel. Cheap reliable setup...probably around 100 total unless you choose a Shimano stradic or spinfisher or similar higher quality reel, then it would be about 200 or more..wal mart probably has them in stock.. |

Also I would add don't waste your time on cheap wal mart combos such as Shakespeare. They're pretty garbage and go to shit pretty easily..it's worth the money to pay double for a quality brand reel.. |

Reel: Zeebaas (20 or 22). Rod: 9' - 9'6" Shimano Tiralejo.
You'll never own another combo for life. |

Ugly sticks have too much play at the tip. Its hard to get a good set.
Penn 550ss is one of my favorite mid sized spinning reels |

Kind of depends on which ugly stick rod you are talking about. I have one sitting in my garage that is super stiff for pulling snook out of structure. Granted, it is only a back up rod now as I traded it out for a Loomis several years ago, but it served its purpose in pulling several 40" + snook out of pilings.

Maybe it's my crappy old equipment that's keeping me from ever catching anything anymore, and not some lack of fish caused by whatever.
Yea, that's my story. Maybe the wife will even buy it when a drop another couple hundred bucks so I can finally catch $20 worth of fish. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

I'm looking at the Penn Fierce II reel. There are a bunch of sizes though, and don't know which I should get. Does it go by length of pole you will match it with? |

Daiwa's new Black Gold is one of the tightest reels I've every seen for $100.
I live a slightly larger reel for the surf rod. ------------------------- I was right. |

I just checked out the 4500 and 5000 today, both reels are $119 - $95 on e-bay - and have the same body, but the 5000 has a larger rotor and spool. The 5000 holds almost 500 yards of 40 braid and both have a drag of 22 pounds. Pretty solid for a $100 reel.

^^^Cole^^^^ agree those reels are slick, but a cheap 9-12' rod and you are good to go. If slinging lures maybe invest more $$ for a lighter weight rod but IMO on surf rods you don't always get what you pay for.
I have had a 10' Berkley that came as a combo, the reel died after a couple months so upgraded the reel(twice now currently with a penn 6500 spinfisher) and still use 15 years later. Robby at the 76 dive center or black dog in MEL beach are my fav tackle shops. ------------------------- I troll 2L.com to be a better person in real life |
