Went offshore St. Aug with a buddy on sunday, and we were striking out all over the place, until we moved out to 25+ miles

Thought I saw a Cobe come under the boat as we were pulling up to spot, so I grabbed my new baitrunner that already had a jig on.

Hooked up pretty quick near the bottom in 100' and the drag started burning.

After a pretty long battle (got him to the surface 3 times and he ran back down each time, using his head as leverage), I got a nice surprise.  My first Aftrican Pompano.  I was stoked on what was otherwise a slow day..... Unfortunately we got covered up in BIG cudas shortly after

How is the meat? Like pompano? AJ? Dolphin?

I just had Rainbow Runner for the first time and it was surprisingly good. It has the consistency of salmon, but a neutral flavor kind of like dolphin.

Somewhere between pompano and Dolphin I guess...... Not as good as the former, but better than the latter.  WAY better than AJ...... and hot box bonitas

I gave a bunch to my parents and I had dinner with them.  I think it was a little over marinated, (Like you would do if you were keeping a Bonita ) but the texture was excellent.

There's more (albeit in the freezer now) so I'll try something different next time

We once caught a Rainbow Runner trolling in the keys.... very good.  Supposedly makes great sushi.
