I'm starting to see quite a few of these - pretty blooms for a short time, but the leaves are attractive in the summer. How much would I hate myself if I planted one out by the pond where I could see it from the house? Would I get in trouble with the native plant police (I try, but I am not a purist)? I know they don't produce much in the way of edible fruit, but I have too many animals around to ever worry about that (the only way I can grow tomatoes is INSIDE the darned house!).

I'd try it. They were cute in Jacksonville. Native flatwoods plums and Chickasaw plums are nice but we're a bit far south. I need to get more familiar with native hog plum, Prunus umbellata. |

Yes, I have never seen those out in the woods - some wild guava near the river in Tosohatchee (but the deer get most of those). Ralph the game warden for Deseret used to make guava jam and always gave me some though.
I will let you know how it goes. Rockledge gardens probably has some - they are usually where I can find different stuff.
