Once established, 2 or 3 months, Areca can live without any care. Maybe fertilize every so often. But, they are care free weeds. make pretty good fence if planted close together. Bananas are different and need almost daily watering and are not as cold tolerant.

I live about the same distance from the beach in St. A.... but my yard is pretty low (wet) Banana trees go NUTS in my yard. Yes, they do make a mess after winter is through.... but I currently have 4 handles of bananas growing at the moment

Arecas are messy trees. Lots of fruit and boots falling off all the time. Cabadas are a much better but similar if you can find them.
