It can be done, but it has to be cleaned and roughed up to the last inch to remove a generation of wax, oils and other buildup. That is a difficult task with epoxy.

Lots of wet sanding, unless Additive F was used.

I put my beloved BING bonzer in for a tail repair and the ding repair guy put my board between two logs and cranked down the straps so hard that the nose now has series of stress fractures like ripples down the nose from rail to rail. They don't appear to be more than cosmetic but I want them repaired. It sounds like this is what I would need to do. This is a poly board. Can it be done, how much would it cost? Who would do that?

This is not all that complicated folks. Does the davo have dings? Sand the shit out of it, wipe it down with copious amounts of denatured alcohol. That will help remove epoxy surfactants. If they are present, NOTHING will stick.
Then shoot the shit out of it with clear spray paint. Stu sharpe, who probably shaped it, uses "speed finish". Don't try to finish it with epoxy. Polyester suncure will work better. As per bonzer: sacrilege! I've met Eaton, and malcolm. Epoxy, polyester? I'll fix that. ------------------------- spindrift |

It can be done, but it has to be cleaned and roughed up to the last inch to remove a generation of wax, oils and other buildup. That is a difficult task with epoxy. Resin ( either epoxy or poly ) utilizes a "mechanical bond" Meaning it MUST have a thoroughly ruffed up ( and clean, naturally ) surface ..... as Cole said, EVERY sq inch ..... to actually stick to. Otherwise, it will just chip and peel off. ------------------------- "Most people would die sooner than think; in fact, they do." - Bertrand Russell "Morality is doing what is right, regardless of what you are told. That's cake, even if it's glossed. The cracks can be removed if done correctly with styrene. ------------------------- I was right. |

I hope people tip for good work these day. I did some seriously tedious repairs and hardly ever got a penny extra. Hell, most people tried to talk me down. I charged $30 for a glass-on fin with damage to the board and they would barter with me.
Sorry for the rant, but craftsmen like George and ET, and craftswomen like Jessica are saving something that is precious to you. Treat them well. ------------------------- I was right. Edited: 02/22/2023 at 05:27 AM by Cole |
