So JetBlue's surfboard policy says that they charge $50 per board on top of the checked bag fee but only allow one board per "case". Has anybody tried to get through with two (or more) in a bag? If they caught it idk if they would just charge me $50 more for the second board or tell me to get f*cked. Thoughts?

They def allow multiple boards in a single bag and they usually count them. This is the cheapest way to go.
Couple years back, I took 3 boards using 2 bags. I paid $50 for each board, plus $75 for the extra bag... each way.

I've been in this situation but not with Jet Blue. Tried to pass a bag full of 3 boards as 1 board. Got charged for 2 on the way there and just 1 on the way home.

In my experiences it really depends on who you get at the counter checking you in. Be very aware as you approach the check in counter. See who is smiling the most, don't go to someone who appears to be having a bad day. Allow the person behind you to go ahead if it looks like you're going to get an old wench checking you in.

If you get up to the counter and they ask how many boards you have in the bag, always start by saying just one. Go from there. Sometimes they won't even bother to check. If they do look at the bag and notice it looks like it has more than 1 board. Start listing things you packed in the bag along with the board: bubble wrap, cardboard, towels, baggies, shirts, flops, sun screen, snacks, shoes, hats...etc. Don't stop mentioning things until they say ok.

Now the tricky part, if they call your bluff and ask you to open the bag, well you really don't have a choice. Slowly open the bag and reveal 1 board while doing your best to hide the others. Be sure to pack plenty of towels and materials to cover the other boards. This is when you put your serious face on and say something like "look just 1 board". They don't actually want you to unpack your bag infront of them especially if there is a long line behind you.

If the jig is up and they are on to you, its time to only admit to 1 more board being in the bag.

I have had good luck with Jet Blue bring boards. I travel with a hard case but I always tell them I have one surfboard to check when I get to the counter and usually at some point they will ask how many boards and I just say one board. I have never had them ask to look in the case. Always be polite and smile as they deal with jerks all day. Last month flying out of orlando to costa rica they didnt even charge me for the board but on the way back they charged me the $50.

Went in October got charged $100.00 for two boards in one bag, went back in March got charged $50.00 for two boards in one bag, guess its who you get and if they are having a good day? Remember you still have to pay for the check-in fee of $25.00

Any 2019/2020 updates?

Going on JetBlue this spring and hoping to put 2 boards in a hard case for $100.

Like others have said. It depends who you get checking them in. Put a lock on the zipper as well. We got hit coming back but we were good to go going to PR.

Surfline posted a recent update for all airlines here:
https://www.surfline.com/surf-...bag-fees-airline/18407

For JetBlue, it says,
Jet Blue - $100
Price is each way. One board per bag. Counts as part of your checked baggage allowance. No surfboards allowed on flights to/from Bermuda, Haiti, Peru, Port of Spain, Santo Domingo and Santiago. Can't be over 100 lbs.

I added the bold above. My son got hit with that on a trip from Orlando to CR last year. Tiny potato chip boards. Second board was behind a flap in the bag. He told the agent one board, but they counted anyway, on the trip down and back.

As seen above, JB has changed its policy. It is now $100 per bag. 1 board per bag - Stupid. American is $35 per bag up to 70lb's. Fly um' when ya can.

Prolite Smuggler

I've used this bag for a few trips in the past few years and when asked, it works great

The idea is great , but this why Surfers have a bad rap with the Airlines and the general public.

I think that's a little bass-ackward. Airlines have, for years, been sticking it harder and more unfairly to surfers than to any other group of travelers.

Admittedly, some surfers in the past have filed damage complaints against airlines for dinged and broken boards, but the last several times I've traveled with a board, I had to sign a waiver saying it was basically an improperly packed, fragile item, and the airline assumed no responsibility.

And, also admittedly, board bags are an awkward size that require loading the cargo bay with a little extra attention.

However, board bags are typically among the lightest cargo an airline transports, so it's not a huge impact to the weight/balance calculations or fuel expenditures.

I'd say $80 per board bag with one board is a fair price each way. Adding a second board to a bag does not come anywhere close to doubling the weight or the volume of the bag, and does not require extra handling, so it should not double the cost.

If the first board in a bag is $80, I'd say $40 for the second board is a fair price. Adding a third board also doesn't increase the weight or volume by much, so I'd say $20 for the third bag is fair. Most bags and most surfers don't carry more than three boards, but you could conceivably allow a fourth for $10 extra, as long as the weight doesn't go over 50 pounds.

80 + 40 + 20 + 10 would be $150 for 4 boards. That allows two buddies to pack 2 thin boards apiece into one bag, and that takes up much less cargo space than two bags with two boards each. The difference is the airline makes $400 each way rather than $150.

I don't have any surf trips planned, but screw JetBlue when I do.

I'll probably do a snowboarding trip this spring, and the two snowboards I pack into one bag will fly free (or at the usual checked bag rate) rather than some punitive markup.

So, bottom line, , , , ,

"Surfers" only account for about 10% of airline sports tourism. But, surfers account for over 80% of damage claims.
