Snapped my favorite 7' 6" FunShape in half last weekend at Paradise. I'm bummed but it gave me 20 years of regular use. I'm just glad it didn't break out at MH or some other far out break.

I would like to get a clone made of it. It's Poly. I thought I had a shaper lined up but that fell through.

Can anyone recommend a shaper in the Melbourne area that would be able to make me an exact copy (in one piece of course?

Daner, get ready to have a list of who's who in shaping in Brevard...My vote for fun shape poly goes to Stu Sharpe, but there are many others...all are great craftsmen.

Yes I realize there are alot of great shapers in our area, but specifically someone who has the experience and time to make a copy rather than make their own designs. Thanks!

Hmmmmmm, , , , , there is a place in Rockledge on Gus Hipp Blvd where a certain Master Copier has his place of business. He has won that "shaper copying" thing in California a few times, , , , ,

Bruce Reagan. The board will be exactly the same. I don't know how it does it, but he does.

Bruce of QF, I have had him make copies of boards several times.

It will never be the same, never! That board could have been scanned in to a machine then recreated with exact dimensions stringer and glassing and it would still not be exact. It would be similar and have attributes of the original. If you want something close see Tom Neilson.

Tom Neilson. He is only shaper that supports this website. I recommend him. He had made boards for me from copies. Super nice guy.

Exact copy of a 20 year old board that saw regular use?
Two questions:
Q1. Do you want the exact copy of the new board fresh off the sanding rack with all that new volume, spring and liveliness? Or a copy of the 20 year old with reduced volume from desk squish, foot "wells" next to the stringer, less spring and more character?
Q2. If you asked Susan Tedeschi to play "Angel from Montgomery" just like Bonnie Raitt, what do you think would happen? Assume she doesn't have a cast iron frying pan nearby.

First, magic board are born, not duplicated. Good luck! Second, Neilson as great guy and shaper. And, importantly, why not John Prine?

Twenty years ago I tried a buddy of mine's Funshape. Some old timers may recognize the shaper whose boards were called "Pineapple." The second I got on it I loved it. I took it to our local shaper Eric Swanson of Inner Rhythm and he copied it. It was true to the original and that has been my "magic board" for 20 years. So I agree, magic boards are born, but they CAN be cloned. Unfortunately Eric is not able to commit to making me a 2nd clone at this time.

Only in the last year or so I've noticed a decline in the board's character primarily it getting heavier. So yes, I want the characteristics of when it was new. No need for the shaper to work it over with a ball-peen hammer!

Do you want to clone the board or the ride? No way you can precisely recreate the original board between the mix of shapes, materials, techniques and environment. I vote Chris Birch if you want a sick board but the other shapers make great boards as well. https://www.surfboardsbychrisbirch.com/

I am definitely on the Neilson bandwagon! I have three of his custom boards and love riding all of them.

Just a note about magic boards or any board for that matter. Regardless of condition/lack of dings a boards performance will degrade from day one due to fatigue. Even magic boards are going down hill from day one, especially a poly. Some of the new builds have significantly extended the life of a boards original flex but they eventually succumb to repeated use as well. If you ride the same board for an extended period of time the gradual fatigue and subsequent deadening might not be noticed. If you clone that magic board and then rode both boards one right after the other the old board would seem dead in comparison. Of course some surfers may not be concerned about having a board that is relatively new with good flex....but if you want to be sure you are riding the best equipment you need to replace your board(s) at least every year or so depending on how much it's been used. I would be less concerned about fatigue with longboards .....but high performance short boards...getting a fresh one frequently is a good investment. I recently realized that my go to board which I thought was my best board ever really didn't have enough volume. I only determined this by riding another board with more volume the same day one right after the other. In hind sight it was a mistake to not be trying different boards more frequently as a check on what I thought was my "dialed in" board. This is not intended to criticize having a board for an extended period of time, only to offer an opinion on potential down side in regards to peak performance from a given board.

I think it's hard for a shaper to make a copy that feels exactly the same. Hope you get one though.

There are a LOT of really cool shapes now that they dint have out 20 years ago. You should move up to something better and new that match your current skills and weight. Get a good one and that board you want a copy of will just be a distant memory and the new one will be your favorite board.
