So clean. So heavy. That's not an easy drop in. It's misleading when you watch it but seeing those drops they are basically two paddles and falling onto your rail as you pull into your line. You can't possibly know if it's going to open up or crush you until it happens. That's really that critical difference where the pros leave the rest of the world behind by making it.

With the final event of the year in full swing, every heat is history at the #billabongpipemasters. Here is your official breakdown for the Round of 16 scenarios at Pipeline.

Italo Ferreira (BRA)
Peterson Crisanto (BRA)

*Italo needs to advance to avoid being overtaken (and therefore, losing the World Title) by Gabriel Medina
For Crisanto, at this stage tied in 20th with Conner Coffin, he's not completely safe on the CT and a win will solidify his 2020 CT access

HEAT 2
Yago Dora (BRA)
Julian Wilson (AUS)

*Julian needs a win to guarantee his Olympic Qualification spot (2nd spot for Australia) as Jack won't be able to overtake him anymore Yago is currently on the 23rd position on the CT Rankings. Despite the fact he is already guarantee via the QS Rankings, a victory would help his CT qualification and Morgan Cibilic's access via the QS

HEAT 3
Ricardo Christie (NZL)
Jack Freestone (AUS)

*Jack must win his heat hoping that Julian loses, aiming for a win at Pipe to take the Olympic spot from Julian. Jack can also take the Triple Crown Lead from Ethan Ewing with a 1st place at Pipe

HEAT 4
Seth Moniz (HAW)
Kelly Slater (USA)

*Slater must win Pipe with JJF 5th or worse or got a 2nd and hope that JJF finishes 9th Slater would also need a 3rd or better to take the Triple Crown lead from Ethan Ewing

HEAT 5
Gabriel Medina (BRA)
Caio Ibelli (BRA)

*Medina must win to keep his World Title hopes alive - he needs to finish Pipe one position ahead of Italo

HEAT 6
John John Florence (HAW)
Soli Bailey (AUS)

*If JJF finishes 3rd or better, he gets the Olympic spot; If he gets a 5th, Kelly must be 2nd or worse; if JJF finishes 9th Kelly must finish 3rd or below

HEAT 7
Jesse Mendes (BRA)
Griffin Colapinto (USA)

*Mendes needs a 3rd or better to have any hopes to qualify via the CT (hoping that Dora does not advance his heat)

HEAT 8
Michel Bourez (FRA)
Kolohe Andino (USA)

*Kolohe must win Pipe and hope that both Italo & Gabriel lose in the next Round of 16 (9th plc), his only chance to win the World Title. If either Ferreira or Medina advance next Round, Kolohe is out of the WT Race. Michel can take the Triple Crown lead from Ethan Ewing with a 3rd or better at Pipe.

So few Americans. It's something we are desensitized to but imagine if this totally foreign and new you were just learning that the guy from cocoa who is 47 is still getting perfect scores on perfect waves.

I'm guessing there's gonna be 3rd reef wash-throughs today.... wouldnt be surprised if they put it on hold, if not there's going to be some surprising (unexpected) results: 13'@17sec and building

slater had an opportunity to force an inteference on Italo but let him have the wave and it turned out to be his 2nd scoring wave.

Slater won the triple crown, but missed the olympics with that loss.

The final heat in the final contest to decide world champion. Talk about good television!

Very good final heat. Did I hear the commentator correctly when he said that the #1 and #2 had not surfed in the Pipe finals to decide the championship since 2002/2003?

I watched it on my big screen via the WSL app on my Apple TV.

Really good. Happy for Italo he rose to the occasion. Gabby blew it in Portugal or this would not have happened. Italo probably coming back next year better. Brazil with those two and Toledo is formidable.

IMO The WSL are going to have to rethink the interference penalty now that Medina abused it.

The WSL doesn't even call it right much of the time. What about Jack blatantly paddling in front of Zeke at Sunset?

Medina was set up with the same circumstances in the semi.

Jack did the same thing as you say, what Medeener did?! How'd ya figure- Jack should be sanctioned coming next season for his putting his board in Zeke's path, and Medina should be sanctioned next season for his purposeful unsporting behaviour. Charley should be suspended for all of '20 for his role as a leader and mentor, and the Laws of this comp need reworking so absolutely no dynamic that 'may' bring disrepute to the Sport be allowed with consequence of suspension, period.

Interference seems like something we all know about as surfers but the WSL seems to maybe not know somehow? Once they figured out how to do priority (which in my opinion makes the competitions much better) they figured other stuff wouldn't happen as much.

That Jack didn't get an interference on Zeke at sunset is bizarre. Conspiracy: WSL wanted Jack on tour bad.

Medina did it to himself with his dumb move against Ibelli in Portugal. Otherwise he wins the tour.

Italo really showed his metal at Pipe with a shaky start and great final few heats.

WSL Rules: ARTICLE 171: Interference Penalty

171.11 Serious Unsportsmanlike Interference
If the Discipline Director and Commissioner's Office determine that an interference during an Event was intentional, unsportsmanlike and of a serious nature, notwithstanding any penalty available under Article 188 (which may include suspension from Events or an entire Tour), a Surfer will lose the benefit of counting their best Event result when calculating their Ranking on the relevant Tour (e.g. if this Article is violated at a QS Event, their QS Ranking will be effected). Notwithstanding any resulting discipline being imposed by the Discipline Director, the heat in question can be re-surfed if determined by the Head Judge that the result was affected by the Surfer's conduct referred to within this Article.

First Pipe Master's in attendance was EPIC!!!! All kinds of Sh!t going on, including the Lifeguards with the big win on saving a keiki life. One of the groms got pulled out of the water during Slater's Triple Crown acceptance...flopping around limp...super scary, put an instant pit in my stomach. They revived him, bandaged his head, secured him on stretcher, and ambulanced him to the hospital. He was conscious on the exit.
