I am trying to schedule a three day trip to PR over Presidents day weekend. Need a girlfriend worthy hotel on the ocean.

Everything around Rincon is sold out, except for a place about 8k south of Rincon. However I prefer the N shore for lodging because the trade winds keep things about what feels about 10 degrees cooler. Every time I go to a beach at Rincon, I feel like I am baking due to lack of trades. I have stayed in Aguadilla three times and like that area with an occasional trip to Rincon.

If it was just me on the trip, I would stay anywhere.

So now I am considering San Juan, which I think is a dump, but the tourist hotel area is not bad.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a hotel in San Juan or maybe Luquillo that is close to surf? Preferablly walking distance?

Easy ... 2 Choices in San Juan, La Concha -There is a small wave out front that is not all that great (actually horrible by PR standards) but nice hotel with a mini casino or the better choice for waves - Caribe Hilton which is a short walk to La Ocho. The Wall (La Pared) in Luquillo is a long drive from either but is cool because it is a actual beach break/sand bottom (didn't surf the Western point break there as it wasn't really working) You can see your car from the water and it has a cool beach bar(s) on the beach. If you show up alone you will have a much better experience at The Wall, come with a pack of surfers you will get a bad vibe. The real juice is way out on the outer reefs, find someone with a boat or jetski and you will be blown away by the waves way out there. Too far to paddle out to , at least for me.

I went to PR on a non surfing trip with the wife (it was july, no surf) and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton right next to the airport. If I would do it again I would stay in old San Juan. Don't know about the surfing there but I enjoyed walking around old san juan and wished to stay there. There is another Ritz-Carlton in Dorado Beach and they say there is surf there. We checked out Dorado beach and it looked like it would be good surfing but there was no swell. One of these days I'll make it over to the surfing NW area and leave the non-surfing wife home!

I stayed at Dorado beach about 27 years ago when it was a Hyatt Dorado along with the Hyatt Cerromar. There is a nice break at the point along the golf course. Only private access. Now owned by Ritz and $2400 for three nights!!!

Too rich for my blood.

Surfed the beach break in Luqillo maybe 15 years ago. Only problem there is that it faces east, and you need to get on it early before the trade winds kick in. But...this is not a surf trip.

Keep the ideas coming. I just want to get wet and have some fun for a few hours.

The caribe Hilton is right next to la ocha (stop 8) in condado. You can walk to old San Juan or take a quick Uber. That's the only real surf spot in town; it gets blown out early but I've had a few fun surfs there. Used to stay there for business and sneek in a morning surf. There is a bunch of decent local spots to eat across the little bridge in condado if you get sick of hotel food. Next to the hotel is a bunch of corporate stuff.
