Costa Rica declares State of Emergency due to coronavirus; will close borders to foreigners and non-residents. Costa Rica has declared a State of Emergency in response to the coronavirus pandemic, President Carlos Alvarado announced Monday afternoon. The country will shut down its borders to foreigners and non-residents starting 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. The restriction applies to the country's ports of entry via land, air or sea. Starting immediately, citizens and residents who arrive in Costa Rica will be subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine, President Alvarado said. The travel restrictions will continue through at least Sunday, April 12 at 11:59 p.m.

Foreigners who entered Costa Rica on a tourist visa after December 17, 2019, can legally remain in Costa Rica until May 17, 2020, according to a release from the agency.

They stopped selling alcohol in the county of Santa Cruz because the country didn't want all the people from San Jose to go to the beaches. All the empty/cancelled reservation for holy week were attracting everybody to come. This was a way to curb the fun and desire to go to the beaches. So say my buddy in Playa Grande

According to a chart I posted on another section, In Central America, 222 confirmed, 2 dead, 4 recovered. Used to be, CR had the 3rd best medical system in the world (if you can get to a hospital) If you get sick there, at least you won't lose everything you own. When I used to go, I hoped they wouldn't flay me home.

Puntarenas and San Jose. The Puntarenas option was no Bueno.

The epidemic in the US might peak around June, if columnist Nick Kristof of the NY Times found the right experts. If so, August better?

Guatemala isn't allowing people from the US to visit.
"The New Zealand Government has announced that travellers arriving in New Zealand are required to self-isolate for 14 days. Restrictions will be reviewed in the next 16 days."
So watch out, things are likely to change. What we know is that the epidemic is just getting started on a large scale in the US and likely as not now through maybe July will be a time of little or no travel.

I have multiple clients either in Costa Rica right now or about to travel there soon. Some have asked to cancel their trip because they are being told they need to self-quarantine for 2 weeks when they get back. Luckily I booked their lodging where they had free cancellation up to a few days out. Flights are a different issue, but the airlines are trying to be accommodating. And then you can always get travel insurance, including one with a 'cancel for any reason' rider. I recommend Travel Insured for their good service and fair prices.

Southwest is having a sale. I rebooked my late May-June flight, already cheap, for $89 cheaper. I doubt that travel will be practical during that period. The epidemic might be peaking and the airports might be closed. Right now, listening to the Jacksonsville Symphony, live. They're performing in an empty auditorium. They'd rehearsed, and they do broadcasts, so why not?

All the major ski resorts in Utah are closing as of 3/15. Some of the smaller, more remote ones staying open with limited tickets and operations. Similar in Colorado, from what I hear. Mt. Hood (Oregon) planning to stay open, but with major events cancelled.

I'm increasingly expecting virus infections to peak around May or (more likely) June in the US, maybe different elsewhere. The virus may not thrive in hot weather, so might not be as much of a problem in Central America as in some other places, and there might be an overall slowdown in the northern hemisphere winter. Then a second wave of infections in fall. The virus may be around at relatively low levels for a year or more. So I don't know when normal travel may resume.

Well, that was fun...

The one mom-and-pop ski resort that was getting unbelievable snow kept advertising that they were continuing normal operations right until I got on the plane.

When I got off the plane 4 hours later, they had announced their indefinite closure. Wasted trip.

Panama City airport, Copa Airlines' "Hub of the Americas" is closing starting next Sunday, March 22 at 11:59 p.m. until Tuesday April 21, 2020. Of course the prospect is that things may return to normal after that.

My borther lives at Playa Avellana, As of Friday all sales of alcohol ended at noon, all bars & discos closed, some restaurants are open but operating at 50% capacity and casinos have been closed. Beaches are being closed, all entries: land, sea and air has been closed since Wednesday.

Spirit, the most hated airline that we taxpayers will probably have to bail out, is spamming me with 65% discount airfares to flights that they know they will cancel for places they know they cannot go.

It's not the worst place to ride out a pandemic. As long as someone can send you money.

Southwest is having yet another sale. If you think there'll be a loosening of pandemic restrictions, you might want to place a bet on a flight to somewhere they go.

My place of preference was Mal Pais. It was pristene and uncrowded the last time I was there. I was thinking it was a great place to spend the end. Little people and schit you can eat off the tree. I recently saw a vid on Youtube about Santa Terresa. I didn't even recognize it. The place I was given a house (couple blocks from main entrance next to the first ditch) was a giant multi story glass condo surrounded by smaller habitaciones.

I was there last summer. Its growing but its not Jaco. I don't think it ever will be. Still a stoner town with a surprising amount of supermercados.

Southwest cancelled my (rebooked) end of June CR trip, no explanation. I didn't call. Today, two days later, they send an email with a rebooking for exactly a week later. Fortunately I had moved another trip out of that time slot... I'm still pretty sure one Southwest excursion will have to be cancelled and there's enough travel funds left for another trip somewhere before the end of July. It's a mess.

From the place I stay in Santa Teresa:

>>Many of our guests and friends have been asking about Casa Cecilia and Santa Teresa during the Covid crisis. Hopefully, this summary will answer many of the questions you have been asking, and we are standing by to help answer any more questions you have.

As a country, Costa Rica closed its borders in mid-March, so international travel to and from our little country is no longer possible, except for the occasional rescue flight. Foreigners and non-residents are not allowed to visit Costa Rica at this time. The government has put in place many different "stay at home" restrictions and public spaces have been closed; meaning that all schools, non-essential businesses, parks, beaches and much of the public transportation system are closed. Costa Rica's overwhelming focus is on the preservation of human life, and on making sure people primarily stay home, and have their basic needs met. The government has enacted numerous programs of debt assistance, food relief, and rent reduction alongside a shoring up of our universal health care system. The government has promised to treat all Covid patients in its borders regardless of nationality or medical coverage, but their resources are limited. The incidence of Covid infection and related deaths is very low and officials are trying their best to keep it that way.

In Santa Teresa, most businesses are closed except for supermarkets, the pharmacy and a few restaurants are doing take out. Construction is ongoing on some projects. Restaurants are allowed to open at 50% capacity and some may be doing that soon. The town is very quiet with a mix of long term residents, some seasonal visitors that have stayed on, and tourists that were stranded and now must remain. The beaches are closed, and surfing is not allowed. Many employees have lost their jobs, due to the very abrupt halt of tourism and the closing of businesses. The Santa Teresa community has come together with several initiatives to help those in our town that are impacted the hardest. Long term residents have focused their efforts on food drives and other programs to help families weather the crisis. If you want to help out in any way with these initiates you can reach out to Pia Plant at surfingplant@gmail.com . You can also read here about some of the amazing community efforts that have been taking place in town since the crisis began - https://www.langstonrealty.com/posts/santa-teresa-and-mal-pais-community-comes-together-in-a-time-of-crisis < https://www.langstonrealty.com/posts/santa-teresa-and-mal-pais-community-comes-together-in-a-time-of-crisis>
There are no confirmed Covid cases on the Peninsula yet, and the focus of the community is to keep it that way as long as possible.

We closed Casa Cecilia mid-March as the country closed its borders, with just a couple of long term guests remaining. For guest and staff security, Casa Cecilia now is gated and fully fenced in on all sides, and no longer open to new guests, neighbors or visitors. We do hope to get back to surfing and going to the beach soon, but for now those spaces are closed and patrolled by authorities. Instead of furloughing or laying off our employees, we have offered all a 50% salary reduction, and will keep all staff on through this crisis. Our focus right now is on the well being of our long term guests, our staff and their families. We will be working as a team during this crisis in 4 key areas. 1) We will be refreshing and remodeling the Hotel so that when we reopen, we are better than before. 2). We will be creating a new online presence, web site, and social media presence. 3). We will be overhauling and streamlining our hotel administration. 4) Last, and most importantly, we will be focusing on our customer service, and exploring how to best help our guests now and when they return.

What comes next? Casa Cecilia will remain closed until November 1, 2020, at which time we hope to re-open to the public. We anticipate that there will be restrictions on who can visit Costa Rica, so will we abide by those restrictions, and go above and beyond the minimum to ensure the health and safety our our guests and staff.

What about my upcoming reservation? We have already reached out to most guests with reservations from now until October 2020, and have re-programmed reservations or refunded deposits. With our focus on keeping staff employed and families taken care of, this means that any further refunds would cause hardship for Casa Cecilia, and would likely result in staff lay offs of staff. For our regular guests with reservations and deposits from November 2020 onwards into next high season, we can work with you to reprogram visits and provide future hotel credits. If you absolutely need a refund for future reservations, please reach out to me directly so we can coordinate this in a reasonable time frame.

Casa Cecilia is a second home and a special place for many of you, and our intention is that it will continue to be a refuge for you when it is safe to return. Please reach out to Natalia, Macarena or myself with any questions your might have.

Stay safe, stay inside and keep in touch!<<

Southwest canceled my CR trip. The Travel Funds from that trip are usable through November of next year. I got a cash refund for an American Airlines trip that had been scheduled for right now. Waves about 4', water temp 53. Weather 55 and sunny.

I checked the August trip, somewhere else. It had been rescheduled, leaving 20 minutes to get through US immigration & customs and onto another plane. EEK. On the plus side, flights are much more available than when I made the original reservation. So if you have a booking, keep an eye on it!

I do recommend making reservations early for any time between mid November and Easter Week 2021. The borders will open at some point and the popular lodging options will sell out. I wrote this article this week - Why Costa Rica is a Great Place for a Family Vacation

(QCOSTARICA) Costa Rica Health Minister, Daniel Salas, on Friday, announced the extension of the border restrictions for an additional fifteen days, that is, until June 30.
During the restrictions, Costa Rica will continue to deny the entry of tourists; only Costa Ricans and residents (who left the country prior to March 24) will be permitted entry, be tested for covid-19, and subject to a mandatory 14-day isolation order.

Restrictions all over the place. It's understandable for CR to be postponing tourists. South America is having terrible covid outbreaks and Nicaragua still looks like a mess. The US Embassy is arranging more flights to evacuate US citizens. The border with Costa Rica remains closed.

There's not enough room in the hospitals there for a pandemic. They are impressive with their measures to make sure it's prevented.

We walked down the north embankment once. it was spooky as crap. We saw a bunch of cows go to the water's edge, on the other side, while one stood on to. As they were drinking we saw a bunch of Vs moving towards them in the water. When the hilltop cow saw them, it bellowed and the others fled to high ground. Fuggin cows are smart. One night we were at a friends house on Krypt road in Jaco. I was going to fetch a mango and pcked a bad one. I threw it across the street and I muyst have hit a cow because there was a scream. Next morning when we went for a surf, the cows were pacing the fence giving stinkeye.

Hope we have a banner hurricane season. Nobody is going to allow travelers from US, certainly not from Florida. Canadian friends are pushing their government to keep borders closed. Cant blame them, we just don't seem to get it!!!! We are the absolute laughing stock of the world right now!!!

People in countries with universal health care seem to have a better sense that they are all in this fight together. I'm hoping for some good summer swells like always but it's that waiting game we all know too well. That mid summer trip to Costa Rica for a three sessions a day for five or six days really leveled it out. Jonesing now.

Yup, since there is nothing else to do... Spent the 4th of July in CR last year as well. Went to the new Oxygen Mall with family. Went to Rio Celeste and stayed in the most rustic cabina in the Mountains Caught Grande good. Caught Negra Good with 5 guys out. Caught Marbella good with a few guys out. Then topped it off by going to the Osa Peninsula to surf Pan Dulce, Matapalo and backwash while staying in the most epic ecocabina on the planet. My son got his first real wave. He paddled in and finished 300yds down stream. Look for the cabina on YouTube. "Pieza Paraiso" (piece of paradise in Italian) This year??? drink cheap beer in the backyard.

I go alone 3-4 times a year for quick three days of surfing. I usually will take a date or friend once every few years and zipline, horseback ride, hit springs, volcano, etc. Went early March this year from the 5th to 9th right before stuff got serious. Wouldn't want to fly right now anyways but hopefully by November I will be able to get another trip in.

I got this from Hotel Cocal:

We are happy to let you know that Costa Rican's international airport Juan Santamaria is opening August 1st 2020 for countries within the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada, initially with a total of 5 flights per week. Flights from other countries will be allowed to enter Costa Rica at a later date and is now been analysed by the government.
The government has taken all the necessary precautions to keep all our visitors safe and making sure the wait at the airport is not long. The protocol was established by the airport administration with the cooperation of the health experts from the government and the private sector.
Costa Rica was certificate as a safe destination by the World Travel and Tourism Council. The county's protocols were submitted by the Tourism Board and they exceeded the expectation of the council, given Costa Rica a prestigious spot worldwide, amongst other countries such as Aruba, Dubai, Turkey , part of Spain and others.
Some of the protocols Tourists will need to follow are:
. Answering a questionnaire before their arrival.
. Provide results of test showing negative for Covid-19this test must be no more than 48 hours old.
. Submit proof of travel insurance in the event they need to extend their travel time and to cover medical expensive if needed.
. Wear a mask or face shield at the airport

-------------------------
So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off.
