RIP

The Tomson cousins were just a few of my idols growing up.

He may have made some bad decisions , but he certainly knew how to push the boundaries .

Randy : I too remember : J- Bay , Durban and Cave Rock ( interesting nothing said about Instinct ----- Gotchas predecessor ? )

I had forgotten about all those 80's companies. Shaun was sponsored by Instinct I recall.

On another note, I would liken your surfing style to the Tomson cousins ... charging regular foots!

This made me want to watch Bustin" Down the Door, so I did. Great movie and since I graduated high school in 1977 it was nostalgic and well worth the 90 minutes. Single fin round pin tails were the board and smooth surfing was the rule Cole I did keep one Surfer Mag, the one with Shaun Thompson on the cover.

Bustin Down the Door is on Netflix I believe....if anyone hasn't seen it- highly recommended- great watch!

and on Amazon Prime, and On Demand with Spectrum. My favorite Surf flic, ever, even after 5 Summer Stories. Though haven't seen many more than those couple

Free Ride ( 1977 ) With Dan Merkels groundbreaking water cinematography is arguably the best documentation of that era .

Michael was a ghost. There were dozens of photos of him ripping, but the shots were always too distant to see his face and there was rarely a closeup. Rabbit, Shawn, Ian and Lopez were all over the place, like portrait models, but he blended into the background.

I guess it's a prime case of letting your surfing do the talking.

I remember Free Ride . One of the things that made those movies so much fun was that it would circulate through the state like a tour. when it hit your town the whole surf community came out to the local spot to watch and hoot and holler . I miss that old school connection .

Going to see a Surf movie in the 1970s in a Public setting was a ritual onto itself . As soon as the lights would dim, about 75 % of those attending would fire up their " Mandatory Surf movie joint " and the whole theater would be shrouded in a instant haze of Marijuana smoke ,the sound of beer bottles rolling down the aisles and then everyone would go absolutely ape shit at the first wave ridden .The audience could really interact with what was going on up on the screen , a truly unique experience !

You nailed that setting like a great novelist! I remember one at the play house on Ramp Road in Cocoa Beach. Both Salick brothers in attendance and I can see little (not so little any more) Phillip running around about 2 years old in a hawaiian shirt. Of course that setting didn't include the Mary Jane, but the beer bottles rolling were in force.

Sounds more like the Draft House!

I remember surf movies in the mid 70's in Cape Cod. When the movie came usually for a double one night showing at the local town hall it was full on!! It was our ONLY chance to see what live action waves were like elsewhere- no internet, no other video period. So when that first wave would appear....usually Pipeline of course....the entire crowd would just howl!!! It was an event that brought us all together and made us a community. We'd catch rides from older friends or mothers would drop off and come back or whatever....but we were going to be there period!! Man those were some great great days and memories.....and Michale Tomson and crew were center stage for it all.....R.I.P. MT- you lived it well brother.....

LOL that is spot on! I remember the first surf film I went to at Brassy's and it was Clark Poling (sp) that made it. It was an experience to be remembered! Great memories of the old days
