Hey Thing Two is looking to get a longboard skateboard for some low intensity casual carving/general hanging out and maybe light commuting between classes. Any recommendations on brands/types etc? I know absolutely nothing about skateboarding other than what I told her: Two kinds of skateboarders; those that have broken bones and those that are going to. And she's already checked that box thanks to a raised sidewalk slab edge, ouchy. (NTY, I'll stick to water, LOL). Thanks in advance 2ndLer's!

Hey there- they don't really specialize in longer boards though some of them are a bit longer- the CARVER boards are truly on another level for surf simulation and pumping techniques- super fun and speed can be generated from almost a stand stil position- if you want a real long dog- I think Sector 9 may have some- but they are great for a down hill glide or a kick down the street to the beach, but will cramp your style if it's carve flow you are after- good luck in th search amigo!

Agree with above comment 100%. I have a gravity longboard. Durable and rolls and carves well. You can also go custom or upgrades. I upgraded the trucks and Bearings for optimal carving and speed but not necessary.

Thanks for your replies, any feedback on Kryptonics? That seems to fit her budget.

Thanks for your replies, any feedback on Kryptonics? That seems to fit her budget. Are you talking about just Kryptonics wheels, or full Krypto board/truck combinations? I don't know about Kryptonics' quality control of late, but I still have some vintage Kryptonics wheels and one board I occasionally ride. There are lots of good, soft wheels out there now, and I recommend them for the smooth, quiet ride, and their ability to ride over rocks and cracks without breaking bones. As for cruising boards, 36" seems to be a sweet spot (depending on your height and the size of your feet). I have a 42" longboard that I put a Carver front truck on, but don't like it nearly as much as my full Carver (36") setup. My son's 32/33" is also fun, but not quite as flowy. If you can buy just one Carver truck, you might be able to set up a nice board affordably. Carver used to be really anal about not letting shops sell trucks only, because they wanted the full-board sale. I had to pull an insider connection 8-10 years ago to get mine. For the record, I've never ridden a Sector9 board that I like. I think a lot of that is because their boards are pretty flexible (no objection to that by itself), but then they'd mount the front truck too close to the nose. With a flexible board, all the torque needed to turn a truck was lost in the flex. If you move the front truck back a little, and maybe add some kind of stiffener between the board and the truck, a Sector9 might be fun again. If you do get just one Carver truck, make sure you get the right model. I understand they have several out now, and I don't know what's what. But their old-school, swinging-arm truck is da bomb. If you need to upgrade on a really tight budget, start with good soft wheels and good bearings, and maybe some softer rubber bushings for the trucks. Edited: 05/06/2021 at 12:50 PM by CurtisEflush |

Wow, that's a helluva deal. I don't think you can buy a single Carver ("SurfSkate") truck for that price. If it doesn't quite turn like she wants, keep in mind the possibility of softer bushings and/or moving the front truck back an 1/2 inch or so to shorten the wheelbase. You might need to grind out some new wheel wells if the wheels start to bite, or maybe just go with a thicker riser pad. They also make wedge riser pads that are supposed to improve the turning geometry, but I never experimented enough to find a different recipe that I liked.
